Meet Brooke Moss of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Moss

Hi Brooke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was working a tiring corporate 8-5 job when I was inspired by my friend, Jewels, who was a lash tech. I was so tired of collecting money for my corporate job and wanted to collect it for myself and my family. I wanted to be able to afford taking my children on trips and not having to get PTO approval. I finished the year out at my office job and started the program in January of 2019. I was so determined to start school that I actually declined getting a meniscal repair surgery in fear that my recovery would interfere with my learning. Regardless of the set backs from gaps in the education programs and financial hardships, I finished my 750 hours in just 6 months and became licensed that summer. I had no idea where to begin. I was prepping for my graduation ceremony by getting my nails done at LUX NAIL BAR in mesquite tx. as I was reviewing their menu I saw they offered facials and about the services. the man I asked happened to be the manager. Ahn “Tony” told me that they didn’t have an esthetician on staff and if I knew one to refer them for an interview. I quickly responded.. “IM AN ESTHETICIAN! ” and the rest is history. Ahn, his wife Angie, and the owner, Kim, provided a very welcoming environment for me to build my foundation. Along with renting a room, I worked the reception area and that allowed me to consult with nail clients and offer my services. It helped me build up the confidence to approach new clients and put my name out there. THEN, Covid happened. We were forced to closed the doors and collect stimulus checks. but I didn’t stop there. I started selling at home facial kits to make money to pay the bills. When we were finally able to service people again, i went back to the nail salon a few more months before decided to open my solo suite. I absolutely loved my suite days. my clients would come through regularly and I was making a lot of money. I took my kids on trips just as I dreamed to do. however, it did get lonely. I missed the upbeat vibes from the team at the nail salon. the community and togetherness is what made me so confident. so, I decided to move into a hair salon. I met so many people at the hair salon and was able to build many connections with people in the industry which eventually led me to Viva La Brow and Adriana. Adriana provided a safe environment for me and my clients. when I met her, I was in a dark place due to grief but her and the rest of the team at VLB really helped me get back to myself. FULL CIRCLE MOMENT: when I joined the team at VLB I was not aware that the same Jewels that inspired me to get into the industry, was currently working there! Like, okay God, I HEAR YOU! It was the confirmation that I needed to know that I was indeed in the right place AT THE RIGHT TIME. the location has since been bought out and now called The Brow Bar. The owners, Kat and Luis, are amazing and are currently helping the team with marketing and just overall building each other up. It’s very beautiful. I have also took on a role as an Educator at VXO Beauty Academy. Vashtai and Johnny are working as a team to shake up the education in the beauty industry and help fill in the gaps that have been present for some time. Im really excited to be apart of this ground breaking experience and I cannot wait to see where this leads me next.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
absolutely not! I busted by behind to get where I am today. lol. my first struggles were during school. the teachers were burnt out, treated a lot of us like children, and in some cases turned us against each other without realizing it. I was told by one of my instructors “the beauty industry is 20% science and 80% art, we are here to teach you the 20%.” sounds kinda crazy., but im glad she told us that because it activated my ambitiousness. there was this one time a girl made me cry because she threatened to sue me for getting lash glue in her hair. mind you, the service was discounted because I was still learning. I deleted my Facebook account and went ghost for a good 5 months. it bruised my ego a lot because she was a childhood friend. it just proved to me that not everyone is for you or will support you and that’s okay. I struggled with content for many years. I felt that social media was doing too much and I didn’t want to be apart of it. I still struggle with this from time to time but I have learned that I need to make the changes necessary to keep up to date. ive also had my fair share of industry drama lol but.. what’s said in the brow room, stays in the brow room and no matter what drama arrises, I chose integrity and love over everything else. 😉

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I offer a range of brow and lash services but all my services are catered to enhance clients natural beauty. from time to time, I will get a client who wants to try a trendy brow, like straight or thin or no tails.. im opened to it but I will educate them on other ways to remove brow hairs to preserve regrowth. I also specialize in teen brows. a lot of my clients will bring their daughters to me so I can wax them for. the first time. Im really proud of that because I am also a mom, and my mom is who taught me the brow mapping technique that I use today. I also educate my clients on proper after care and provide them with useful beauty tips and product recommendations. I’ve done multiple trainings both in person and online to stay up to date with new techniques and services and have done extensive research on brow oils to help nourish and grow hairs. I actually have my own mixture that I am VERY proud of.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Jewels and Adriana helped me build back my confidence. They each inspired me to be better and helped me be confident finding and expressing my true self. My family and the father of my children helped so much by being my rock since the beginning!! they sacrificed jobs and so much time to make sure my kids were taken care of while being in school and working on clients. especially my mother. she has done so much from helping me design my kits, decorating my suite, and caring for my children (and much more). A lot of friends have come out to me and support my business. All my day one clients who followed me from mesquite to north Dallas and always refer me.. they are the real goats!! im grateful for each and every one of them.
