Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Hernandez
Hi Mari , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started lashing when my son was only 3 months old. Before that, I did makeup and nails but something gravitated me to lashes. I quickly was determined to enhance my skill and quickly so I practiced all the time. I constantly watched YouTube, had models coming in, and if I didn’t have any models I would lash on a mannequin. At the time I worked at Kohls corporate in Menomonee Falls, WI and I told myself when it got to the point where I was turning clients away because of my hours there I knew it would be time for me to resign. Working full time, being a new mommy, and growing my clientele was not easy but again, I was determined. Fast forward to now, it will be 6 years of me lashing and I have been back and forth from Milwaukee to Dallas and am months away from the big move with a huge leap of faith to Dallas permanently. So far I have met so many amazing people and other lash artists and I can not wait to call this my home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! There is a book called Draw the circle by Mark Batterson and he talks about there always being a time where we all go through spiritual, relational, or financial famines. I’ve been through all. I feel I am in one now if we’re being all the way real but my faith is God is firm. The same week I opened up my lash studio in Oak
Creek, Wisconsin I lost two people to death and a long term relationship of mine ended. It was tragedy after tragedy. That shook me up. For about a year I got off track but then God gave me a wake up call. Since then, it’s still a day to day journey for me but God is opening up so many doors and have sent amazing people to get me where he wants me to be.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a lash artist! I specialize in natural but glamorous looks that make women feel amazing! I think what sets me apart from others is not only the work but the relationship I build with my clients and the atmosphere I provide. We may start off as lash besties and then down the line I’m being called for prayer or guidance, to attend weddings, or baby showers. It’s more to just lashing.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Word of mouth is everything. I have business cards with me always. Sparking up conversations with someone who is my target client anywhere I go, works. Joining community groups on Facebook has helped a ton as well.
