Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddy River
Freddy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing around on my grandmother’s piano out of boredom when I was about 10 years old. I started figuring out on my own how to put melodies together and create progressions that end up turning into full compositions. Beatmaking never really crossed my mind until I was a teenager, around 15 or 16 years old. My passion is to eventually compose for films, but once I got a taste of what I could do with beatmaking, I fell in love with it real fast. I met someone back in 2017 that introduced me to the west coast artist, Larry June. I didn’t pay much attention at the time. However, I remember a couple of years later being at the lowesst point in my life. I was homeless and on the verge of quitting everything. Suddenly, I remembered that artist that my friend had introduced to me a couple of years back. I instantly started deep diving into the catalogue of Larry June, CardoGotWings, Curren$y, and other influential west coast artists. Everything made sense after that. I ended up composing about 100 melodies and samples for west coast producers and sent them out to as many people as I could. Eventually, Cardo reached on instagram and asked to work together. Fast forward, and now not only am I homies with one of the greatest producers in the hip-hop scene right now, but I also ended up making the melody for the song “Pop Out” by Larry June and ScHoolboy Q. My growth hasn’t stopped since and i’ve not only improved in my production skills, but i’ve been able to add more and more influential west coast artists to my production catalogue over the years.
During this time, i’ve also added a lot of production to my own artists catalogue. A lot of people don’t know this, but I make a wide range of music that I release on all
platforms under Freddy River. Hip-hop, jazz, Lo-Fi, electronic, etc. I don’t put myself in one box. I just compose whatever comes to my mind. And if that happens to be some crazy sounding electronic track mixed with jazz or something, then so be it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenges for me have come from my life outside of music. I’ve had a crazy life. I struggled with my mental state and my mindset for a long time, trying to make sure that it didn’t effect my goals and stunt my growth. Of course, the worst ended up happening and I placed myself in multiple near death situations. I took a break for a while from going as hard as I was on music. It was only recently that my mindset had finally found more stability and I’ve been able to find a good balance between handling what’s going on in my life and going as hard as I can to become successful in my career goals.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an multi-genre music producer who’s taking over the west coast rap scene and soon to be taking over the Dallas music scene. I specialize in just making good music. The fact that people can search up Freddy River and find albums that introduce different styles of sound and different genres is what i’m most proud of. I guess the thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I can consistently make people feel something with my sound. As an average listener, it never sounds like i’m just making a beat. It sounds like i’m making a story.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, I need to thank my good friend, Evan, for introducing me to the timeless west coast sound. I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career if it weren’t for hanging out with him that one night and speeding through a neighborhood at midnight while blasting the iconic “Mr. Midnight” album.
I also need to give thanks to Foley and Tavaras Jordan. They were the first 2 producers with a name to truly believe in my work and give me an opportunity to make a name for myself.
