Conversations with Bart Weiss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bart Weiss

Hi Bart , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in film and video in college. When I edited my first film, I was hooked. I went on to graduate school in film at Columbia because I thought teaching would be a good thing. I have been teaching film on the university level since 1979.
In Dallas, I started the first nightclub that featured music videos, and it was a big hit. From that, I started a column about music videos in the Dallas Morning News, then the Dallas Times Herald, and then a syndicated one through the United Features syndicate.
I worked as a film maker and film editor. then in 1968 I started the Dallas Video Festival and ran that for 24 years..
I have produced the tv show Frame of Mind on KERA for 25 years and produce a podcast on documentary films.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
there have been many struggles along the way
raising money, promoting, building audiences and spelling.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
what sets me apart is my love of the art and culture of cinema; I promote the work of filmmakers making great and important work that is outside of the mainstream.
One of the things I am proud of is a program we called Expanded Cinema. The Omni Hotel in Dallas has a video wall on the outside of the building. I got them to let us show the work of video artists, which was cool in itself, but I got the local NPR station to broadcast the soundtrack live.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have had so many people helping me, starting with my wife. My board, the artists whose work we showed.
