Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Kelly.
Hi Janelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in social media at Tarte Cosmetics in 2018. As the Social Media Coordinator, my role consisted of community management (answering comments, DMs, posting to all of the social channels, etc), content creation (filming and editing makeup tutorials of myself or my coworkers), and managing all of the social media accounts. It was expected that I stay on top of trends and attempt to be proactive and, I honestly credit that experience to how I landed my future social media roles.
After Tarte, I joined Fenty Beauty’s social media team at the height of covid (March/April 2020). We had just shifted to having everything online and the beauty industry was distraught. Customers wanted to know how they were supposed to test products if they couldn’t leave their homes, and the beauty industry wanted to know how we were supposed to sell lip and face products when everyone’s faces were covered with masks 24/7. My team and I decided to use creative ways to deal with the madness. This included funny hashtags like #CheeksOut for our cream blush launch so captions would look something like this: We know you’re bored inside the house but that doesn’t mean you can’t get those #CheeksOut!. When political tensions heightened around George Floyd, we created content surrounding the issue because we knew we had a largely black audience that was feeling pretty ostracized on social media. Rihanna actually loved that we posted content like that. We were also the first beauty brand to host not one but two online events. One for Juneteenth where anyone could tune into our IG Lives throughout the day for a Juneteenth DJ set, live yoga class, or makeup tutorial. And the other for the launch of Fenty Skin. This was one of the most fun times of my career.
After Fenty, I had a brief detour with a small startup and then headed over to Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH). I had the most amazing team and it was pretty awesome working for a legacy brand. I worked closely with the founder, Anastasia Soare, and filmed content with her in her Beverly Hills home. I was able to hone in my creative skills here, too.
Most recently, I directed the social and influencer programs at Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s dog food brand, Kismet. Yes, dog food wasn’t what I was expecting either but I really loved their message and figured it would be nice to do something different. We launched with a bang. I planned the launch party, curated the most perfect guest list of mega influencers and flew them in from around the country to hang with their dogs at Chrissy and John’s Beverly Hills home. It was an incredible night. Just a month later, I planned 3 more events with DOG PPL, a well-known members-only dog club in Santa Monica. Each event was better than the last.
With all that I’ve learned, I’m eager to help small businesses be seen and help them build a loyal community around their businesses. Social media is such a powerful tool and shouldn’t be overlooked.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no. Some teams/people see the value of social media and allow you to do your thing. Those are my favorite kind of people. Others see it as a burden or believe because they spend time on it that they know just as much, if not more, than you.
A lot goes into strategy, analyzing data behind content, and tailoring content to fit your target audience. And we monitor these factors daily.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
7th Hour Consulting takes the burden of handling social media from you. I understand what people want to look at when they’re scrolling on a platform. I understand what content has worked in the past and what hasn’t. I understand how to properly analyze competitors and take and tailor their content so that it fits your brand.
I’m faith-based. I believe I have been given the opportunity to build my resume so that I can help others later on. I’m at the “later on” stage now. 🙂
I’m incredibly proud of my resume. I’ve worked really hard over the years to gain all of this knowledge in the business. I want people to know that I will work my hardest to deliver. That’s just who I am.
What makes you happy?
My family. They’re incredibly supportive.
