Daily Inspiration: Meet Sheridan Mears

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheridan Mears

Hi Sheridan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born into a Rodeo family. My Dad was a bull rider turned stock contractor, and my Mom was a barrel racer. I enjoyed hitting the road with my family as we raised and hauled bucking bulls. I ran barrels myself for a few years but was heavily involved in scholarship Pageants and competitive dancing as well. I didn’t always have a career in the Western Industry in mind, I just knew I wanted to be a trail blazer. It wasn’t until my Spring Semester Freshman year at Tarleton State when I figured out my career path. After moving to the Cowboy Capital and talking to other career professionals, I found my calling to work in the Rodeo world. I dreamed of becoming a Rodeo Reporter or serve in a role where I was able to educate the public on this sport we love. Getting over my shyness to show people what I am capable of was a true test of strength, but my dedication to my dreams fueled me to overcome the naysayers and nervous feelings to pick up a camera and start blazing my rail. I traveled to rodeos and interviewed any cowboy or cowgirl who would give me their time. I would write articles, publish them to my website, and take photos of the event. I eventually started working with brands and volunteered at events to gain experience. Fall semester of my Senior year is when it was time to start job searching. A Marketing position was open at Cowtown Coliseum. I applied and got the job. I felt blessed to find an employer who allows me to do all the things I planned and more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to get to where I am today was not easy, but I knew I needed to work hard and keep pushing forward to have the career I wanted. When I made the decision to change my Major from Animal Science to Agricultural Communications, I had a few people who doubted me along with the trouble of finding businesses who wanted to take a chance on a college student. Instead of letting that drill me down, I made the negatives fuel me to work harder. What I am most proud of is how I blazed my own trail. When someone says “you can’t” I was quick to prove them wrong.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I was recently promoted to Assistant Marketing Manager of Cowtown Coliseum. As I previously mentioned, I wanted a career where I can interview rodeo athletes and western icons while educating the public on the history of rodeo. Having this position allows me to do that and much more. I run all social media platforms, website, signage, media inquiries, anything digital and advertising. Cowtown Coliseum was built in 1908 and is home to the World’s first indoor rodeo and World’s only year-round weekend rodeo. The years of history and groundbreaking advancements we continue to do make this arena one of the most iconic venues and ideal place for me to share my passion of the western world. I am most proud of my journey to get to this point and look forward to how I can continue to keep the history alive in this building.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
If the little girl I was back then could see me now, she would be so proud of how far I have come. I was one of those kids who wanted to get involved in everything and be an all-around cowgirl so to speak. My biggest downfall was being shy. I competed in pageants, competitive dancing, golf, was a member of FFA, Honors Society, Student Council, Volleyball, Barrel Racing, and Drill Team. I took pride in being able to balance all of my activities while attending school. I feel my involvement in those organizations has shaped me to be the woman I am today. I have improved my public speaking skills and the way I carry myself tremendously.
