Today we’d like to introduce you to Giancarlo Bernini.
Hi Giancarlo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of magic. My favorite movies growing up were movies with wizards and fairies and magical creatures. When my dad showed me my first card trick, I became hooked. At first magic became a way to make friends and break the ice in new social settings. It was a way for me to break out of my shell. However, as I performed more, I started to realize how magic impacted those around me in a positive way, not just how it helped me. In college I started performing shows on campus as ticketed events and started creating my own illusions. During my senior year, I was asked to appear on the hit TV show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us”. Following this appearance, I decided to make magic my full.time career. I have been doing it since, mainly performing for corporate events, churches, and colleges.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The pandemic was definitely a big struggle, because I had to navigate starting my small business in uncharted territory. It pushed me to be creative with what I offered, such as virtual magic shows, and to push myself to deliver the same quality of entertainment over a video call. Personally, I’ve also struggled with impostor syndrome and self-doubt as a performer, but I’ve been able to overcome that incrementally over many performances and through having a good community of friends around me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a magician, I try to give my audiences a fresh experience unlike anything they’ve seen before, even if they’ve seen other magic shows. I use custom music in my show composed specifically for the tricks that I perform. There’s a lot of original material, and I work with some of the top consultants and illusion builders in the world to create the effects in my show. I want the magic to feel as real and immersive as possible, not like sleight of hand or a trick. I try to make sure there is meaning beyond the magic, something that leaves a lasting impact.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success means becoming the fullness of the person I was created to be, which includes pursuing excellence in art. Naturally, I have financial goals and dreams about the type of venues in which I want to perform. However, I very simply make sure that everything I do is in line with the goal of sharing Truth, Beauty, and Goodness with the world. I like to remind people that awe and wonder are emotions that are not left behind in childhood, and hope that they leave my show wanting to seek those experiences in their own daily lives.
