Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwayne Prater.
Hi Dwayne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a kid I always asked for someone’s phone to take pictures with or video record a moment. I was a 6 year old self proclaimed photographer. In my mid school years I didn’t have the most fun navigating through the discovery of me being gay. My families acceptance of me did quiet the negative voices from the bullies at school— which played a huge role in my expressive personality later on in school. Eventually I unapologetically walked around being the most authentic version of Dwayne. That expanded the community I was blessed to encounter and thankfully I still have that community today. My best friend Savannah saw a light and a creative gift in me that she knew would influence others. She was already impacting others with her admirable presence on social media— so with her wisdom and faith that God won’t ever leave me astray, I began posting with more intention. Since my first post in 2021 to now, the gift to create content and bravely express the most authentic version of the kid in middle school to the WORLD— Over 160K supporters have been with me along this journey!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Content creation being my full time job was not a reality I thought I’d ever live. In 2023, I experienced the most transformative year in my finances. Partially through my corporate job but mainly from creating content for paid partnerships. Brand collaborations were being filmed sometimes 2-3 days out of the week for about 9 months. That blessed me to afford moving out of my parents house and lease my first apartment, get a dog, travel, and of course… Save for the taxes the IRS would soon be demanding. Once Q4 approached, I had recently just lost my 9-5 job and the momentum of brand partnerships came to a halt. That lead to almost abandoning my creative passion forever due to the lack of hope in my content creation journey. Fast forward to now; through my supportive community, acting on my faith and the most gracious God, I have been blessed to move back into my parents where I can passionately pursue creating content again, and even secure a few paid partnerships in the midst of it. Thankfully this time, it’s with the most incredible support of my talent agency, Sol Y Luna mgmt.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since 2021 I have built a social platform by creating content focused around fashion, beauty, lifestyle and skincare. Throughout the journey I have been blown away by the brands I’ve been able to work with: Dior, YSL, Michael Kors, NARS and other remarkable brands. The community I’ve experienced through my creative passion has not only inspired me but has established such a safe space where I am able to express the most authentic version of me.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how Dallas has this perfect mix of big-city energy and Southern charm. The creative scene here is so underrated—there’s always something happening, whether it’s a pop-up, an art show, or a cute new café opening. Plus, the people here really support local creators, which makes doing what I do even more exciting. The weather can be a little chaotic—one day it’s giving sunshine and sandals, and the next it’s cold and gloomy. Also, the traffic? Definitely not my favorite part. But honestly, it’s all part of the Dallas experience at this point.
