Conversations with Omayra Espino-Vazquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omayra Espino-Vazquez.

Hi Omayra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always the kid with a camera. I would take pictures of the people I loved and the curiosities surrounding me. As I grew, my love for photography grew with me. It grew so much that I decided to study my Bachelor’s degree in photography and that’s when I zoned in on portraits, particularly ones that captured the “true self” of a person. I took a pause after my mom passed away (she was my biggest supporter) and I have slowly gotten back to it with the mission of creating portrait sessions that focus on having fun and being present, hence the glitter/confetti sessions, because we never know when we will live our last day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I struggled a lot with confidence as I was finding my “specialty”. I tried all that I could until I started enjoying specific sessions. My mother’s passing hit me very hard. The month after her passing, I found out that I was pregnant and that was another whirlwind (I experienced a very difficult PPD). I lost my way for a while in photography, but it kept calling me to pick up my camera and create.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in glitter/confetti photo sessions. These kinds of sessions allow people to have fun, which is why i love them! I’m proud of how I can provide a safe environment for people to have fun and be able to capture these moments. I like to call these moments “glimmers”. Whenever you have a bad day, you can always go back to a memory in which you were joyful. This is what images can do for you. They are little time machines that can transport you into fond memories and are one of the only things left behind when someone is no longer there.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe luck has played a part in my career. It has all been putting myself out there and taking chances. Have I failed? Yes, but it has only added to my experience.
