Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler McWilliams.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
How I got to this point is the biggest testament to God’s grace! My journey with photography started when I was about 12 years old. I got thrown into a random class at school and it turned out to be a film class. In that class I learned that I was interested in camera’s and video. As I got older, about 15 years old, I realized that my church allowed people to serve on their photography and video team for Sunday mornings. I reached out and immediately got plugged in there. I cannot really describe it but photography came so naturally to me. I later learned I was following composition rules I didn’t even know existed. After about a year serving on this team on Sunday mornings, I was asked to be the photography intern for the church, which was such a blessing! I ended up being the intern from the time I was 16years old to 18 years old when I left for college. I spent a year at Abilene Christian University when I realized that I was learning things I already knew. So I decided to leave school and come back home to Fort Worth. In the last month I was at school I entered the interview process at my church. After about a month in the interview process, I received a part time position with photography and social media. I had been doing that for about 8 months when I was promoted to full time! In this I also bought my first camera and started freelancing with various people! That is currently where I am at. Working full time at Keystone Church in Keller Texas and doing photography on the side. God has been so gracious to me and my family and I cannot even begin to describe how thankful I am for everything that He has done for me!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a little hard for me in my position due to my age. I am only 20 years old and I am sometimes having to lead a team of people that are much older than me so it can sometimes be difficult for some people to take me seriously.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a free lance photographer and a social media manager! I pride myself on the fact that I do not limit the type/ style of photography I do. If a client sends me inspiration, or something that tells me what they want, I will make sure I know how to get them those photos! If they want motion blur I will make sure I can do that for them. I have been privileged to work closely with Motive Marketing and I have gotten so much experience from them! I have worked with organizations like Grapevine Faith Christian school, Southlake Carrol ISD, Southlake Carrol Youth Baseball, etc.
Switching gears and talking about social media, I currently run 3 of the social media accounts for my church and I previously worked with XO Marriage for their social media! I am a little newer in the social media marketing world but I am finding I love the freedom to be creative!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Until I was 20 years old I was shy, and quite. I was one of those people that really only showed my true personality with the people that were close to me!
