Today we’d like to introduce you to Elli El-Effendi.
Hi Elli, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After graduating college, I worked a job that brought me little joy and barely aligned with my natural skills. I quit after about a year and was doing some serious soul searching, wondering if I would find a career that would bring joy, fulfillment, and minimal stress. At this time, I read numerous books designed to help me figure out what to do with my life. In one such book, the author recommended asking close friends and family about their most prominent characteristics. Answers varied but every person had “meticulous” on their list, and rightly so. Meanwhile, my parents went to visit my godfather and his new girlfriend who practiced acupuncture. This piqued my interest as a full-time career-seeker: meticulousness is something everyone would hope for in their acupuncturist. I had also discovered in my soul searching that helping people was a career priority for me. And the rest is basically history! I applied to programs around the country, chose a graduate school in Austin, and eventually opened a practice here in Dallas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned, there was a period after my first real job of having no idea what I wanted to do and frankly, who I even was. I always thought that I would find my passion in college and that would be that. Even though it took me a bit longer than I anticipated, I’m so grateful for what all I’ve learned in my search for a purpose. I think it’s important for people to realize that once you figure out the “what” of a career, that doesn’t mean it’ll be smooth sailing from then on. I struggled to find the confidence to open my own practice once I graduated from my program. I felt like I was making excuses to stay idle instead of taking a risk on a new business. After finding the courage to start, I still have days of questioning whether I have the experience and skills to treat every ailment that walks through my practice’s door. At the end of the day, I’m doing my best and am proud of how far I’ve come!
We’ve been impressed with Acupuncture by Design PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My traditional Chinese medicine practice includes acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, gua sha, cupping, and Chinese herbology. I treat all conditions except infertility, but have a special interest in orthopedics, pain management, and digestive disorders. I utilize abdominal acupuncture the most, but also use Dr. Tan’s balance method when necessary. I think what sets me apart from other practices is that I spend the entire visit focused on a single patient, and every client has my phone number in case of any questions or concerns. Developing a trusting relationship with each and every client is the most important aspect of treatment to me, so that is exactly what you can expect.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters from day one have been my parents. They were so excited when I told them about my plan to apply to acupuncture school and have been there every step of the way. Once I officially opened my practice, my mom sent an email to every one of her acquaintances, which is truly how I was able to stay afloat in the beginning. I am also forever indebted to my clients for spreading the word! I have one client who has sent at least five family members my way, along with countless friends. Lastly, I’d like to credit my classmates and clinic supervisors from my masters program. I’m not sure I would’ve made it through without Sunday study sessions and the pearls of wisdom bestowed by my brilliant supervisors while practicing as an intern.
