Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny.
Hi Jonny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in music at a very young age singing and playing guitar, followed by a variety of bands ranging from rock, metal, and country in my teenage years.
I continued making music on my laptop in college; a variety of hip hop and electronic music, but finally came into my own after a series of traumatic events led to myself waking up in the hospital, dropping out of college, and the world shutting down from covid in the matter of weeks.
Being left in a vulnerable state trapped inside the walls of my parents house helped me reflect and learn about myself, who I am, and who I want to be.
My style and sound shifted into Kill Jonny alongside my Self-Titled debut album.
Kill Jonny is raw and real. It is healing and growth. It is me, unapologetically.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a solo project, playing live has been a particularly stressful facet of my endeavor. I am beyond fortunate to have friends willing to play alongside me and help give the best show possible, but ensuring availabilities as well as teaching parts to incoming members can be a long, difficult process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I don’t consider myself a singer or a guitarist despite utilizing both mediums to create my art. I am not Kill Jonny– I am a composer. I create rhythms and melodies and tell stories for which the entity of Kill Jonny stands for.
I like to push the boundaries of genre and themes by incorporating unorthodox instruments and movements while speaking about topics commercially abandoned. Subjects such as suicide, self-harm, religious frustration, and drug abuse are juxtaposed by pop-driven chorus’ sandwiched between heavy, biting verses.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to release a slew of new music in the upcoming year while working alongside other outstanding artists in my scene. These new projects have been very fun to work on and will give a new, fresh sound while still maintaining the integrity of Kill Jonny.
I’m most excited to finally roll out new merch and make a much awaited return to the stage. Lots of fun things in the works for the coming year.
