Today we’d like to introduce you to Saiyad Salahuddin Ahmad.
Saiyad Salahuddin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had been working as a chemical engineer for Frito-Lay for six years. The job paid the bills and kept me busy but something was missing. The corporate rat race and politics was getting to me and I yearned for something more fulfilling where I could actually help people in a tangible way. For years, I had a side interest in how to improve my health and especially alternative medicine. I never thought of a career in alternative medicine until I met someone who had opened a private college called the Dallas College of Oriental Medicine. I started by taking an evening class after my 9-5 job and I thought, “Wow! This is way more interesting than what I am doing.” I started saving and planning so that I could quit my engineering job and pursue my passion. In 2002, I received my license in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and opened my practice the following year. I have never looked back since then and love what I do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle initially was having the courage to take the financial hit that goes along with quitting my engineering job. Ultimately, I had faith that if I continued to pursue my dream and excelled at it, the finances would take care of themselves. It took about four years of operation before I made what I was previously making and ever since then, by the Grace of God, I have exceeded the income I was previously making! Another challenge, on the social side, was constantly explaining to people who knew me as an engineer (and my wife!) why I made the switch. That, too, eventually faded and many people admired me for the fact that I had the courage to quit my previous career and pursue my passion.
Another challenge was learning the business side of opening a medical practice. Classes in school were simply not enough to prepare for the business side. Fortunately, I learned along the way and consulted experienced practitioners and marketing consultants to continuously grow the practice.
