Meet Ashley Frederick of Whip it like Butter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Frederick.

Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Ashley Frederick — the Recipe Creator and Food Blogger behind Whip it like Butter. We’re about all things pound cake! What began as a general food blog in 2017 under the name Kultural Kreations has since evolved into a dedicated space celebrating the nostalgic joy of baking pound cake in many variations.

In 2021, I rebranded to Whip it like Butter. Whip it like Butter was born one night when I was baking a pound cake. It just came to me out of the blue….and the rest is history! It turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made. Since then, my business has truly flourished.

While I’ve become known for my pound cake recipes and YouTube videos, my site offers much more — from comforting dinner dishes to sweet desserts and everything in between. In the early days, I dabbled in a little bit of everything before realizing that my heart (and my audience) was drawn to pound cakes.

The inspiration to focus on pound cakes runs deep. As my beloved grandmother and other family members grew older, I felt a strong pull to preserve the traditions we shared — especially those sweet moments in the kitchen. Visiting my grandmother and great-aunts growing up always meant two things: lots of laughter and something delicious waiting on the table plus plenty packaged up to take home. Those memories are priceless.

Whip it like Butter is more than a brand — it’s a tribute to family, tradition, and the joy of baking from scratch. I hope it inspires others to build community, share love through food, and discover that truly great recipes don’t need to be complicated — just made with care and a little bit of buttered-up love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, building momentum for my website and YouTube channel was slow — painfully slow at times. On top of that, I was juggling a full-time job, so learning how to balance my time while nurturing my business was a constant challenge. Like so many entrepreneurs, I wore every hat: content creator, editor, marketer, customer service — you name it.

But in 2023, everything shifted when I launched my Facebook group, Black Peoples Pound Cakes. My group was a game-changer. It created a passionate, engaged community around the very heart of my brand. The support and enthusiasm from the group has truly propelled my business forward.

Of course, with new growth came new responsibilities. I had to reevaluate how I spent my time so I could show up fully — both for my group and for Whip it like Butter. It hasn’t always been easy, but the connections I’ve made and the love for pound cake we’ve shared have made it all worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m often asked if I sell my pound cakes — and while I’m truly flattered, that’s not part of the business just yet. Maybe one day! For now, my focus is on creating delicious, approachable recipes and teaching others how to bake them at home. Helping people build confidence in the kitchen is where my heart really is.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always shy and quiet — the last person you’d expect to become a business owner, let alone someone with a YouTube channel who shows up on camera and goes live. But like my grandmother used to say, “Time brings about a change.” And she was right.

Over the years, I developed a real passion for entrepreneurship. Eventually, I realized that the only thing standing in my way was… me. So I decided to push past my fears and start showing up — not perfectly, but consistently.

Even now, I still have my shy and reserved moments, but I’ve learned how to show up in a way that feels true to who I am. Being visible doesn’t mean being loud — it means being real. And that’s exactly what I bring to the table.
