Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Park.
Doug, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Starting this business had saved my life. I had retired from the Navy at the end of 2012. My military experience didn’t easily translate into a meaningful civilian career that would keep me close to home and out of harm’s way. I had left a position with a company when the travel expectations became excessive and had to find a new job. After months of applying for numerous positions with no success, I had decided to start my own business using many of the skills the Navy had provided me over my 21 years of service. You see, I was a Navy Diver and we can do just about anything. After spending time apprenticing under some reputable pool builders, getting my Certified Pool & Spa Inspector’s License, writing my procedures and even creating some of my own tools, I was finally ready to open for business.
It has been almost three years and Veteran Leak Detection & Pool Inspection has the distinction of being among the most highly reviewed (rated) business of its kind here in DFW. I use this business and the quality of my work as a way to demonstrate the value Veterans can bring to virtually any industry. We are grossly underestimated but not for much longer. “Higher expectations? Hire a Veteran!”
How did this business save my life? My entire adult life was spent in the military, surrounded by elite men and women who shared a common goal. I had a mission, an identity and perceived value. When I retired, it was hard to find that feeling of self-worth again when meaningful employment seemed unattainable. Veteran Related Depression often has nothing to do with PTSD. Sometimes, it’s just about the challenges of starting over and building a new life when the previous one was so full of purpose and meaning.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ll say that I had it easier than most. My wife was extremely supportive and the business became lucrative well ahead of my expectations. The veteran community here in DFW has been and continues to be instrumental in my success. To pay it forward, I offer advice and support to other veteran entrepreneurs whenever I can.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Veteran Leak Detection & Pool Inspection – what should we know?
Veteran Leak Detection & Pool Inspection is a full service pool inspection business. If you are considering the purchase of a home with a swimming pool, you’d be wise to consult a professional inspector to evaluate the pool and its equipment. Home inspectors may be able to inspect the pool for an additional fee but if that inspector identifies something wrong, they will likely just tell you to call a pool guy and you’d end up wasting time and paying for that inspection twice. If there are issues (damage, leaks, or unsafe conditions), you’d want to know how those issues translate financially. My reports provide that info when possible and because I don’t perform renovations or system repairs, the inspection report isn’t a veiled bid or a sales pitch. There is no conflict of interest. I also provide full leak detection and underwater crack evaluation services when necessary.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, my wife deserves credit for where my business is today. Foolish as it may seem, she believes in me. She encouraged me to take risks and stick with it even when it didn’t seem like it was going to work out.
Second would be my customers. They have built this business and drive its growth. Most of my work comes from referrals. Plus, I’m deeply honored every time a client takes the time to leave a review. I wouldn’t be contributing to this article without the support of my clients.
There were so many other contributors, I’d be scared to list them all for fear of leaving someone out. They know who they are and I will always be prepared to pay them back for their support.
