Today we’d like to introduce you to Ambar Garcia.
Hi Ambar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic at a young age and went on to study Film and Video at the University of Texas at Arlington, with a concentration in Fine Arts. While in college, I was doing promotional work for various companies, which eventually led to a position on the Dallas Cowboys promotional team, where I interacted with fans during game days.
It was through that role that I learned of a new opportunity within the organization… they were seeking an on-camera Spanish-speaking reporter. Although sports media wasn’t initially my area of interest, I saw it as a valuable opportunity to launch my career as I approached graduation. What ultimately helped me land the position was my background in video editing, along with a clear eagerness to learn and a strong work ethic.
When I was first hired, my role was essentially what it is today but at the time, the Cowboys were just beginning to invest in reaching the Spanish-speaking market, which gave me a unique opportunity to grow alongside the position. I came in with limited knowledge of football, but I embraced the challenge, dedicating myself to learning both the sport and its culture. It was very much a “fake it ’till you make” type of mentally for me but it just goes to show that you can achieve anything you set your mind to if you’re willing to put in the work. I also very fortunate to have had a supportive manager who allowed me to develop and evolve within the role, as well as some great teammates who coached me along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey was far from easy. Stepping into the world of professional sports came with a steep learning curve. I had to quickly familiarize myself with a sport I hadn’t previously followed, and adapt to the distinct language and culture of football. It truly is its own world, and I had to immerse myself in it from the ground up.
Because my position was new at the time, I was essentially building the role as I went. I often had to wear many hats and navigate challenges independently, without a clear roadmap. One of the biggest personal hurdles was becoming comfortable on camera. Filming in front of others was intimidating at first, but with consistent practice and repetition, I began to build confidence and feel at ease in front of the lens.
Interviewing players presented its own set of challenges, especially conducting interviews in English while simultaneously translating into Spanish in real time. It was a skill that I had to develop quickly since I had never done that before and it’s not something that you can just practice on your own, you need real “live” reps.
Another layer of complexity was working as a woman in a male-dominated field. Although the industry has progressed significantly, it’s always been crucial to be able to establish clear professional boundaries and navigate building relationships with athletes in a way that maintains integrity and respect. Building relationships in sports is not always as easy as it sounds, but I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a great team and the sports industry continues to grow and evolve, creating a more inclusive environment for women.
Today, one of the most personal and ongoing challenges I face is balancing a demanding career in sports with motherhood. The NFL schedule is intense, requiring long hours, travel, and year-round commitment. It often means making difficult sacrifices, like missing my son’s basketball or soccer games due to work obligations. These are the moments that weigh heavily, but they also reinforce the importance of purpose, passion, and the example I hope to set for my child.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Current Role: Spanish Content Manager – Dallas Cowboys
As the Spanish Content Manager for the Dallas Cowboys, I oversee all Spanish-language content across multiple platforms. My responsibilities span a wide range of areas, including managing the official Spanish website Somos Cowboys, overseeing our Spanish-language social media accounts, and contributing to television shows, podcasts, and on-camera segments.
I provide coverage of the team to ensure our Spanish-speaking audience stays informed with the latest news and developments. A key focus of my role is expanding our reach beyond the United States, with a strategic emphasis on growing our presence in Mexico and tailoring content to better serve that market.
One of my proudest accomplishments is winning a Lone Star Emmy Award for Sports Analyst. During my time with the Dallas Cowboys, I’ve been honored with eight Emmys across various categories, but this particular award holds special meaning. When I first started, I had little knowledge of football so earning recognition in a field that once felt completely foreign is both humbling and surreal. It’s a testament to the hard work, long hours, and sacrifices I’ve made to grow in this role. What began as a “fake it till you make it” mentality turned into something real and deeply rewarding. Even now, it feels unbelievable.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are several people who have played a pivotal role in my journey, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.
First and foremost, my boss, Derek Eagleton (Senior Vice President of Media & Programming) has been an incredible mentor and advocate from the very beginning. He has always encouraged me to spread my wings, offering a safe space to grow, make mistakes, and learn. As a creative, I thrive in environments that foster innovation and autonomy rather than micromanagement, and Derek has created exactly that. His leadership style embraces creative freedom and experimentation, which has not only empowered me but has also been a key factor in our team’s success.
Another important figure in my journey is Bryan Broaddus, a former NFL scout who worked with the Dallas Cowboys. When I was just starting out and trying to understand the game, Bryan was instrumental in my learning process. He never made me feel ‘dumb’ for not knowing something and always took the time to patiently break down plays and answer my questions. His support was invaluable.
And finally, my husband. Working in sports often means long hours, frequent travel, and missing out on weekends, holidays, and family milestones. It’s a demanding lifestyle. He’s the one who holds things together at home when I can’t be there, managing the daily responsibilities, being present for our child, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly in my absence. His support behind the scenes has been vital to my success, and I’m deeply grateful to have a partner who believes in me and supports my career wholeheartedly.
