Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Falls.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The idea for Project Mom Bags started in 2022 when my son was inpatient awaiting a heart transplant. I was a new mom living in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) just short of a year. I saw other new moms come in having their worlds turned upside down. I would make care packages to help them get through the first couple days of being postpartum in an uncomfortable environment. In January 2025, I was able to officially make Project Mom Bags a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While we’ve certainly faced challenges—like sourcing products, building a brand from scratch, and learning how to effectively reach our audience, the journey of starting Project Mom Bags has been surprisingly smooth overall. What’s made the biggest difference is the support we’ve received from our families, friends, and an incredibly generous community that believed in our mission from the very beginning. At first, the idea felt overwhelming, but our unique strengths have helped us turn that big dream into something real. Working together as a team; each of us bringing something different to the table—has made all the difference. We wouldn’t be where we are today without each other and the people who’ve stood behind us every step of the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Project Mom Bags. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Project Mom Bags is a registered a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization created to support mothers with newborns in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). These moms are often navigating the trauma of recovery while their baby is fighting for their life—and many do so without rest, resources, or support. That’s where we step in. We provide thoughtfully packed bags filled with postpartum essentials, comfort items, snacks, and a handwritten note of encouragement—small gestures that offer a huge reminder: you’re not alone.
What sets us apart is that every bag is curated from personal experience. We know what it’s like to live in a hospital room, to feel helpless and forgotten, and we include the things we wished someone had given us. From hard-to-find comfort items to a tip sheet customized for each hospital, our bags offer practical help and emotional support.
In just six months, we’ve delivered over 55 bags to moms at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Medical City Children’s Hospital CVICUs. We’re incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made in such a short time and are determined to expand our reach throughout DFW and across Texas. At our core, Project Mom Bags exists to make sure no mom feels invisible during one of the hardest moments of her life.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Dallas is an incredible city with a strong sense of community, even though it’s massive. We love the diversity here—the rich blend of cultures, the wide variety of restaurants, and the way people from all walks of life come together to support one another. Whether it’s cheering for our sports teams or rallying around important causes, Dallas shows up in a big way. One of our favorite examples is a local mom group made up of women who’ve all had babies with congenital heart defects—they meet regularly to connect, support each other, and share resources. It’s that kind of community that makes Dallas so special.
If we had to pick one downside, it would definitely be the traffic. Navigating the metroplex during rush hour can be a serious challenge—but it’s a small tradeoff for everything else this city offers.
