Today we’d like to introduce you to Gideon Erhabor .
Hi Gideon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My Story
I was first introduced to barbering while playing college football in Minnesota. One of my teammates had picked it up as a hobby and eventually became our “team barber,” cutting a lot of our teammates’ hair—mine included. Being an out-of-state student, I was looking for a way to earn income while living on campus. He told me something I’ll never forget: “If you learn how to cut hair, you’ll always have a way to make money. People will always need haircuts—and convenience is everything.”
He gave me an old pair of clippers to practice with and took me under his wing. At first, I was terrible. Barbering is a skill-based craft—everyone starts from zero. Unlike football, where natural athleticism can give some people a head start, barbering doesn’t offer shortcuts. Every good barber you’ve ever met was once bad. I became a bit of a joke on campus, known as the guy you don’t go to for a haircut. I didn’t make a dime while in college. But I kept observing, learning, and taking notes.
When I moved back to Texas, I got a welding job in Dallas—but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d regret not giving barbering a real shot. So I enrolled in barber school in Carrollton, TX. My parents didn’t support the decision at first, which only added fuel to my fire. That’s when my entrepreneurial mindset kicked in. I started researching ways to stand out, and noticed that although a few people offered mobile haircuts, none were doing it professionally.
So I leaned in. I branded myself as a mobile barber, offering high-quality, on-location haircuts. This opened me up to a whole new clientele—busy professionals, families, entrepreneurs—who valued both convenience and quality. Many of them shared business advice with me that I applied immediately. By my second year, I was earning a sustainable income, and eventually, I even out-earned my parents.
After years of cutting just about anyone interested in the service, I saved enough money to reinvest into something bigger. A family that had known me since high school saw my discipline and drive. They appreciated that I lived below my means and focused on long-term growth. They approached me with the opportunity to co-own a salon in Addison, TX.
That’s how Highlight Clips Barbershop & Rebecca’s Salon was born. Together, we built a one-stop shop in Addison where the whole family can get taken care of—from kids’ haircuts to mom and dad’s grooming needs. This journey started with humble beginnings, but through persistence and purpose, it’s grown into something I’m proud of.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Obstacles/Challenges
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road—far from it. When I started out, I had no idea if there was even a market for mobile barbers. I was learning how to cut hair, build a brand, market myself, and process payments—all at the same time. I didn’t have a blueprint. I had to teach myself how to wear multiple hats: marketer, customer service rep, social media manager, and barber—while still trying to improve my actual craft.
There were times I doubted myself because I was promoting a service I wasn’t yet confident in delivering. But I knew the only way to get better was through reps, through showing up every day and figuring things out one step at a time. I took the embarrassment, the learning curves, the rejections—all of it—and kept going. That grind built my confidence, my skills, and eventually, my clientele. Looking back, those struggles are the reason I’m where I am today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Highlight Clips Barbershop & Rebecca’s Salon is a one-stop grooming destination located in the heart of Addison, TX. What sets us apart is our focus on convenience, quality, and community. We’re not just a place to get a haircut—we’re a space where families can come together, where husbands and wives, sons and daughters can all get their grooming needs met under one roof.
We specialize in modern cuts, mobile barbering, and a full range of salon services. What originally started as a mobile barbering brand has now grown into a physical location that reflects that same convenience-first mindset—except now, instead of going to our clients, we’ve created a space where they want to come to us.
We’re proud to be known for our professionalism, cleanliness, and intentional service. Whether you’re a busy executive, a parent with a packed schedule, or someone simply looking for a personalized grooming experience—you’ll feel taken care of here. Every client matters, and we pride ourselves on making sure everyone leaves feeling confident and respected.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is how we’ve built trust—client by client. We didn’t cut corners, we built relationships. And now, years later, many of those early clients are still with us today. We’re continuing to grow, but we’ll never outgrow the core values that got us here: service, excellence, and consistency.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve learned that every major breakthrough in my life came after a risk. I took a big one when I walked away from a stable welding job to pursue barbering full time—a craft I hadn’t even mastered yet. On top of that, I marketed myself as a mobile barber before mobile services were normalized, not knowing if there was even a demand for it. I had no roadmap, no guaranteed clients, and no backup plan—just faith, work ethic, and a belief that people would value the convenience I was offering.
Another huge risk was investing into a physical salon in Addison. I was in my mid-20s, had been living below my means, and finally had some money saved. I could’ve played it safe, but I believed in the vision—and more importantly, in the people behind it. That move changed everything.
To me, risk isn’t about recklessness—it’s about calculated leaps. If you believe in the value you bring and you’re willing to outwork the uncertainty, the risk becomes a seed. Eventually, with time and persistence, it grows into something worthwhile.
