Meet Justin Preston of Barn Dance Design in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Preston.

Justin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am an art teacher by trade, and in the summers, I began teaching myself construction techniques. I started by building a back-yard deck, then a greenhouse, then a chicken coop…and I now enjoy creative building as a side job when time allows. I build creative chicken coops with stained glass windows, custom sheds with antique character, design storefront cash wraps, restore vintage campers, and anything else that is fun and interesting. I do most of my work in historic downtown McKinney where I live. I like learning new skills and taking on new creative challenges. I also enjoy passing on my passion for creativity to my art students.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always had a steady job as an art teacher, so creative building has always been a side job of mine…so no big struggles with that. It’s always challenging building something new that you’ve never made before.

Please tell us about Barn Dance Design.
I only take on projects that are interesting and filled with character. I want to create something that stands out and is unique. I think I’ve accomplished that with my work thus far. I’m probably best known for designing many unique chicken coops in downtown McKinney.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
