J/O/E of South Fort Worth on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to J/O/E. Check out our conversation below.

J/O/E, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I am chasing a path of music, fashion, and influence. Music, my true passion, is a fast-paced industry. You literally have to stay on top of releasing new content at a constant rate to remain competitive in this internet/streaming era. Fashion and influence go hand in hand; good fashion choices and pieces can build influence and brand awareness. Overall, with the constantly evolving culture of music and fashion, stopping could mean missing out on possibilities that could have been meant for you.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I am J/O/E. A songwriter, hip-hop artist, influencer, and craft beer enthusiast from South Ft. Worth, TX. Music is everything to me and is one top thing I want to be remembered for. So therefore, most of my time and effort is put into that. My music covers many aspects of my life, experiences I have faced and my love for craft beer. My interests in anime, sneakers, and skateboarding play a part in my creative process as well from a writing perspective. I am currently working on my next musical project, which will explore themes of personal growth and community. I’m excited to share it with you all soon!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My family has been my greatest teachers when it comes to work ethic. From my parents, aunts, uncles, and even my grandparents, I’ve learned the invaluable truth that hard work consistently yields the best results. The more effort you invest, the more rewarding the outcome. I’ve been a direct witness to this principle. To thrive, you must remain perpetually hungry for knowledge, always willing and eager to learn. Furthermore, embrace constructive criticism as a tool for growth. Observing my loved ones tirelessly working, juggling multiple jobs, and relentlessly striving to achieve their needs and aspirations has been truly inspiring. If you harbor dreams or significant desires, be prepared to make necessary sacrifices to attain them. Success is rarely handed; experience, in particular, must be earned through dedication and effort.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I stopped caring about what people think about me and the decisions I’ve made throughout my life. Writing it down has always been a great coping mechanism for me, as it allows me to express these obstacles and show listeners my vulnerable side. It also works very well with writer’s block, at least for me. Pain can make or break you, and if harnessed correctly, can be a valuable asset to your creative process.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
A significant misconception perpetuated within the music industry is the notion that independent success is unattainable. This is simply not true. Numerous resources, including online courses and YouTube tutorials, now demystify the process of achieving success outside of traditional major label arrangements. Even if your ambition includes a major label signing, there are strategies available to capture the attention of these entities. The key question to consider is: how extensive is your desired impact? By contemplating this, you can effectively evaluate the most effective path to realizing your ambitions.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
My only regret is not taking this as seriously when I was younger, but a lot of resources weren’t available back then as they are now. Luckily, I stayed driven, and my love for music grew stronger. I kept networking by going to music mixers, other music shows, visiting studios, and collaborating with other artists and musicians to eventually discover the resources in my community and make the necessary connections to help further my career. Everything happens for a reason; embrace it every time.
