An Inspired Chat with Kelly Magouirk of Keller, Texas

Kelly Magouirk shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building—behind the scenes—is my health. For the past year, I’ve shown up for myself by going to the gym five days a week and committing to strength training. It’s not something I post about much, but it’s completely changed how I feel in my body and in my life. I’m stronger, more energized, and more confident than I’ve ever been—not because of how I look, but because of how I feel showing up in the world.

This kind of commitment has carried over into every area of my life—how I lead, how I care for clients, and how I handle hard days. The discipline it takes to show up for yourself consistently is quiet, but it builds real confidence. And in a business where so many of our clients are walking in the door feeling vulnerable, I think that inner strength makes all the difference.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kelly Magouirk, co-owner and stylist at Erin Kelly Salons in Keller, Texas, where we specialize in non-surgical hair replacement solutions like custom hair toppers, toupees, and Halo Couture pieces. After 20 years behind the chair—and walking through my own journey with hair loss—I found my calling in helping women and men feel confident again through realistic, beautiful, and personalized hair solutions.

What makes our salon unique is the heart behind it. My business partner Chelsea and I created Erin Kelly Salons as a space where people could feel safe, seen, and supported while navigating something as vulnerable as hair loss. We don’t just color and cut—we customize every piece to match your hair, your lifestyle, and your story. Whether we’re fitting a topper for a woman in her 50s who’s tired of covering her thinning crown, or applying a bonded toupee for a man who wants to feel like himself again, every appointment is treated with care and respect.

Right now, we’re growing our client base, building a foundation of trust in the DFW area, and continuing to expand our expertise in hair replacement. We’re not a one-size-fits-all salon—we’re a team who believes in excellence, empathy, and transformation that goes far beyond the mirror.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a kid, I used to say I wanted to be a hairdresser. I remember a family member telling me I needed to “get a real job”—like it wasn’t something to be proud of or build a future on. But even then, I believed in myself. I believed I had something special to offer—that I could help people feel confident in their own skin through great hair.

What’s changed isn’t my belief in myself—it’s my understanding of how powerful this work really is. As a child, I saw hairstyling as fun and creative (which it is). But now, I also see it as healing, empowering, and deeply personal—especially in the world of hair loss. I’ve watched women tear up in the mirror because they finally feel like themselves again. I’ve seen men walk out with their shoulders back after we apply a system that helps them feel more confident. That’s not just a “real job”—that’s real impact.

So no, I don’t believe the lie anymore that this work isn’t valuable. I know, without a doubt, that what I do matters—and I’m proud of the younger me who dreamed it into existence anyway.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
A few years ago, I started feeling restless—like I was meant for more, but I didn’t know what that “more” looked like. I loved my clients and I loved doing hair, but something was missing. I found myself daydreaming about new paths, new careers… wondering if maybe I had done all I could in this industry.

But nothing else felt quite right—until I experienced my own hair loss after Covid. Around that same time, one of my long-time clients was also going through hair loss, and I realized how few accessible, compassionate solutions existed. That was the moment everything shifted. I discovered the world of non-surgical hair replacement—toppers, toupees, bonded systems—and it lit a fire in me I hadn’t felt in years.

Learning this specialty was like being handed a whole new purpose. Suddenly, I wasn’t just helping people look good—I was helping them feel like themselves again. It gave me the “more” I had been craving. Now, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’m more excited than ever to keep building this business and help as many people as possible feel confident in their hair again.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
So many smart, capable people are racing to become strategy experts, marketing gurus, or the next thought leader in their field. And while all of that has value, we believe there’s something even more important that often gets overlooked: people expertise.

Chelsea and I aren’t trying to be the loudest voices in the room—we’re focused on being the most emotionally intelligent. In our business, hair loss is deeply personal. People aren’t just buying a topper or a service; they’re often walking through grief, self-esteem challenges, and vulnerability. If you don’t understand people—if you don’t know how to create a space where they feel safe, heard, and respected—then none of your strategy matters.

Emotional intelligence is one of the most underrated skill sets in leadership today. We believe the businesses that will stand the test of time are the ones led by people who care deeply about their clients, their team, and the human experience behind every transaction. That’s what we’re building our brand on—real connection, real compassion, and a reputation for knowing how to serve people well.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
They’d miss the way I made them feel.

I always say: people may forget the exact haircut or color I gave them, but they’ll never forget how they felt when they sat in my chair—and when they walked out the door. That’s the part that lasts.

There are so many talented stylists in the Dallas/Fort Worth area—people who are incredibly skilled at what they do. And I’m working every day to be among the best. But technical skill alone isn’t what creates loyalty or trust. It’s the way you hold space for someone. The way you listen. The way you remind them of who they are when they’ve forgotten. That’s what I hope clients would miss most if I stepped away—feeling seen, known, and cared for.
