We recently had the chance to connect with Evin DeShawn and have shared our conversation below.
Evin , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes absolutely, I’m currently in a place in life where I’m grateful that I took my time to really walk the journey. I feel much of my earlier parts of life I was always running trying to make my own path. But it wasn’t until I was sat down and shown how this process is supposed to work with letting faith guide you. No worries just truly believe that what Is for you will not miss you.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Evin DeShawn, or Evin DeShawn Stylez. I am a multifaceted artist and creative director with backgrounds in styling, music, production, and community development/outreach. Been working in the feild for over ten years now. And seeing that the most important aspect of what I do is impacting others to find their way. I do so with sharing my story & life experiences. But also being and remaining open to hearing other stories of what my community needs. After years of staying in a fashion space I’m making strides to move into mass communication & production. And moving into radio this year. Which is very exciting and been a special dream of mines my entire life.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Honestly as a child I was told by adults that my dreams was not practical and will never happen or make me money. It stuck with me in many stages of life. But as i became more in my gifts and talents. It showed me that i can have these dreams play out. If I letting and silence the thoughts and negativity others place on me. And follow what’s calling to you.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
To lean into my faith. And that nothing works without effort and dedication to seeing it through. Even on the days when you want to give up. You keep pushing forward. In the mist of suffering is a lesson that will bless you in the next chapter.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you have seen like you have it all together. And it’s not possible to do it with the little you have. Both are absolutely not true. People will see your efforts and will meet you right where you are. The load is never too much for the right people to support and build with you. They will come keep walking and creating.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I truly impacted how people think or see themselves by being themselves. And so not afraid to share with each other what life takes you through. Being fearless to ask for help or be help to others. And most importantly love for self only allows more love for others.
