We recently had the chance to connect with Sara Mires and have shared our conversation below.
Sara , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I happen to be in the Sierra Mountains right now in CA with my husband and 3 kids. Yesterday we went and spent a day at the river and I watched my kids play in the same river I played in at their age with my siblings. It was a very relaxing and joyous time for sure. Besides that, I find joy in a lot of little things. When my plants survive and some even thrive, when I listen to my cows munch hay, when I don’t have to leave the house..JOY
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Howdy! My name is Sara and I’m the owner and operator of Broken Road Farm in Ovilla Texas. I’m a big community and small business advocate. I have collaboration in my blood and love creating ways to work with others. I am very passionate about quite a few things and am definitely all over the place. I got a thing for loving animals and share the love with others. We raise a few Scottish Highland Cows and other breeds of cattle and have various farm creatures. It’s hard to narrow down what I do but I’ll try to sum it up for y’all! I do creative workshops such as broom making, candle making, sourdough starter, tincture making, wreath making, apothecary products and more. We do a kids “Wild Child” Camps and farm educational camps. Holidays are my favorite times and we do Christmas photography with our Highlands and a variety of family and other creative events . We are constantly adding to the farm, coming up with new ideas and fixing fence until the end of time. Creating a place of gathering, learning and enjoying farm life. I am also right in the middle of forming the Ovilla Chamber of Commerce as founding President. I have somehow collected a all star lineup of community loving doers, with all the needed skills I’ve been lacking. We are documenting our formation journey so that’ll have to be a future article! Add in the 3 kids and husband and we are just a chaotic family of 5 that somehow made it here.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The first thing that comes to mind is from when I played soccer. Getting a breakaway, getting past a couple defenders and scoring a goal. One of the best feelings on the planet, I felt invincible every time after that. Soccer is the one who got away, my love that I abandoned in high school, so rude of me. Winning games and penalty kicks, the best!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me things that success never could. Through losing my brother, battling alcoholism and making it through seasons of life that were heavy with hardship, I’ve learned resilience, perspective and certain empathy in a way nothing else could teach. Those experiences made me see the world differently—less black and white, more full of depth and understanding. Every painful, difficult or messy situation has become fuel. Instead of letting suffering stop me, I’ve tried to let it shape me into someone stronger, more compassionate and more determined to figure it out. I’ve definitely had some time outs from that determination, but I’ve made it back and here I am.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
At my core, I’d say yes — what you see is who I am, but like everyone, I have different sides. I’ve been learning how to refine myself depending on the situation without losing my true self. Authenticity has always mattered to me, even when it’s messy. For the public, people usually see the highlight reels, but the real me is even quirkier, more emotional and more layered than what I share online. At the end of the day, my foundation is built on honesty, grit, humor and a willingness to grow. I can’t really pretend which is a blessing and a curse. I am weird, I enjoy it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’ve never been great at doing what I’m told… I’m more of a road less traveled kind of gal. I had no idea what my future would be, life presented me with situations which little by little led me to be a cattle breeder and event coordinator of sorts..super weird. This life somehow found me just as much as I found it — and there’s no doubt in my mind that this is exactly what I’m meant to do, even if I don’t remember what I’m doing half the time.
