Justin Zimmerman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Justin, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are a blend of routine, mindfulness, and intention. I start by grinding fresh coffee beans and brewing a pot of coffee—there’s something about the ritual that helps center me for the day. While the coffee brews, I check the gallery cameras to ensure everything looks secure and in order. Once I have my coffee in hand, I catch up on emails and take a few quiet moments to scroll through social media or read a few pages of a book. From there, I decide whether I’ll head to the gallery right away or begin my day painting. Either way, I like to ease into the day with a balance of calm and purpose.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner of McKinney Art Gallery, located in the heart of Historic Downtown McKinney. I became the sole owner on December 1, 2024, and it’s been an exciting journey ever since. What makes our gallery truly special is the community behind it—we’re home to over 50 talented local artists, including painters, jewelers, potters, and woodworkers. What sets us apart is that each artist actively works shifts in the gallery every month, giving them the opportunity to meet collectors and buyers face-to-face.
In addition, we have five working studios within the gallery, where visitors can meet artists and watch them paint live. It creates a welcoming and personal experience for everyone who walks through our doors, and it allows visitors to connect directly with the creators behind the work. We’re more than just a gallery—we’re a creative family.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I would definitely give credit to both of my parents. They were born and raised in Kansas on family farms, where hard work wasn’t just a value—it was a way of life. Throughout their lives, they demonstrated incredible dedication, perseverance, and integrity in everything they did. Their example instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for showing up, doing the work, and doing it well. Their influence continues to guide me every day.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never give up. You are capable of breaking through every fear and barrier that comes your way. There will be tough moments—times that bring tears, frustration, and self-doubt—but trust me, each one will teach you something valuable. You’ll grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient. Through it all, you’ll remain true to yourself—and that version of you will be absolutely great.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
LOVE. I truly believe love is the most important thing—whether it’s love for friends, family, art, vacations, yardwork, cooking, or simply making someone smile. My closest friends know that I pour my heart into everything I do and always strive to be the best version of myself. They’d tell you that I lead with love and do my best to share that love in all aspects of life.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Most definitely. I believe giving your best includes showing up for others and doing what’s right, even when no one is watching. For me, it’s not about recognition or praise—it’s about living with integrity and purpose. I trust that God sees the good we do, and that’s what truly matters. Helping others and doing the right thing brings its own quiet reward.
