Mrs. Donnica Houston shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Donnica, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I recently just finished MIT training which stands for Ministry In Training – I’ve completed this alongside my husband and when I think of how much I have overcome over the years, and how much resorting God has done in just a year being ordained has shown that God will make your head spin with fulfillment. I never thought I would be able to achieve such an honorable accomplishment with life’s challenges but God remains faithful
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello there! My name is Donnica Houston. I’m passionate about property management, but my heart truly belongs to ministry. I’ve also discovered a new and exciting passion for my clothing brand, “Soft Gurl Anointing.” What makes my brand special is that it’s all about true transformation and authenticity! I don’t sell anything I wouldn’t wear myself, and each piece must represent the brand in a way that reflects God’s true restoration in the lives of women who’ve been broken but are now healed and soft from submission to God’s glory!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Indeed, that is an excellent question. During my divorce, I was in dire need of employment and sought someone to give a chance to a single mother with limited experience in the industry. My former mentor, who is now a dear friend recognized something in me that I could not perceive. She saw an individual with a purpose that transcended the limitations imposed by my previous relationship. I vividly recall her coming into the office and expressing her comfort in my presence, suggesting that I should consider becoming a therapist. However, little did I know that ministry had already commenced, and from that day forward, I gained greater confidence in my own thoughts and opinions because God showed me that he was the only one who could define my story not matter how ugly it looked.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Oh man! I believe relationships have really wounded me, to the point where I had developed this hardened heart for people. I had stopped trusting everyone I became very private and protective of my life and my sons that I now realized that it delayed myself from receiving true healing from childhood issues and as well as truly seeing the fullness of joy in my blessings! God has always been a keeper but let’s be honest living in a world we’re people don’t always reciprocate that same love and kindness that you give can be tough. I believe the number one cause of brokeness in people are from what we connect ourselves to, but then once we have to disconnect it’s like a break times two. To heal I had to really reflect on my connections and time spent within relationships with people but also finding the grace to give to them while truly leaning on God to restore pretty much letting go and not picking up the pieces again, but allowing God to mend but accepting the way the mending looked at the end.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the same as the one you get behind closed doors. I try to approach every situation the same way. Even my close friends and acquaintances would tell you the same things about me. I’m very straightforward and honest. If you ask for my opinion, be prepared for the answer. I’m loving and sweet, but I’m also great at communicating, especially if I see that the person or thing I’m dealing with needs some clarification in their thinking! The mind is a powerful thing!
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I find the most peace when I have some quiet time to myself. After work and all my other commitments, my phone goes off around 8 pm and I really focus on my spiritual journey. I try to hear what my next season of life will be like. I know a lot of people find peace by thinking about what others might think, but I’ve truly healed and understand that peace comes from a different source. It comes from God, and through Him, all things are possible!
