We recently had the chance to connect with Nicole Ying and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes I would definitely hire me.
I am saying this from a place of confidence and self-awareness and self-understanding I’ve built over the years through strong work ethic, consistent quality work, and the ability to learn quickly and reflect. I am not afraid of asking questions and help. I have strong opinions but I listen and welcome different perspectives. I value teamwork and I am someone who brings positive energy to the group and who glues people together. I believe in the success of the team over individual gain, and that everyone has their own role and talents that deserve to shine to the fullest.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a collaborative pianist, which means I play with, or “accompany,” other musicians. I work with instrumentalists and vocalists, and I also play in small ensembles and orchestras. While I mainly focus on the classical music repertoire, I enjoy exploring other genres for fun. Honestly, if you a put a score in front of me, I can pretty much play anything!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom, and all my dear teachers and mentors. I truly feel like the luckiest person because I have been blessed with a wonderful mother and incredible teachers, something you simply can’t just wish into existence. Sometimes I wonder what they see in me, because they always recognize my potential and believe in me long before I believe in myself. They’ve guided and supported me through all the ups and downs, and they’ve never stop believing in me.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I remind myself of all the amazing people and things I already have, and how far I have come. The love and support I receive from those I care about have always been my source of strength. And faith, that the seeds I’ve planted and all my hard work won’t go unnoticed, and that the universe has a plan that will eventually lead me toward the light.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
A core truth in my life is that I am a strong believer in integrity, humility, and having a clear sense of self. I deeply respect individuals who are honest and consistent inside and out, who are grounded and understand there’s always more to learn, and who continually search and reflect, and remain true to who they are and what they believe.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I want to start by saying that what I believe I understand is purely subjective and in no way represents a universal truth. But I do think that one reason we come into this world is to embark on a journey of discovering “self” and staying true to it. Desires, temptations, and material things are mere distractions that blur our vision and pull us away from that deeper sense of self. Our task is to see beyond those distractions and stay focused on our mission in this lifetime, whatever that is for each individual. It is a difficult and never-ending process, but as long as we keep moving forward, guided by love and gratitude, I believe we can each lead a beautiful and fulfilling life, in whatever form that align with who we are.
