Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Gonzalez.
Hi Alejandro, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always lived at the intersection of design and storytelling. Before opening Tlazo Home, I spent years working on high-end interiors for Deborah Walker & Associates from managing million-dollar projects and creating bespoke furniture to sourcing the perfect fabrics, antiques, and appointments. My path took me through roles with a luxury showroom, where I represented Holly Hunt across the Southwest and in Mexico, and even as the right hand to an antique dealer at Embree and Lake Antiques, where I learned the ins and outs of merchandising, sales, and sourcing abroad. Each chapter gave me a deep understanding of how objects, whether centuriesold or newly made, carry stories.
The seed for Tlazo was planted on a 2016 trip to Mexico City. I discovered a new wave of artisans who were reimagining tradition, pieces that felt modern yet deeply rooted in Mexican heritage. I started bringing them home, and soon friends and colleagues were asking about them. That curiosity turned into a conviction: there was untapped potential in championing Mexican and Latino designers in the home space.
In 2020, I took the leap. Even in the middle of a pandemic, I found ways to share these treasures then by slowly curating a collection that reflected the vibrancy I’d seen in Mexico and beyond. Finally, in October 2024, Tlazo Home opened its doors in Oak Cliff.
Tlazo, from the Nahuatl word meaning “dear” or “precious,” is more than a store, it’s a space where people can find objects that carry meaning, spark joy, and weave cultures together. It’s the culmination of my heritage, my design background, and my belief that home should feel both beautiful and soulful.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I launched during a global pandemic, which delayed my plans by a few years. And now, just as I’ve opened my storefront, I’m facing an economic slowdown and the ripple effects of tariffs on international goods. Those challenges are very real, but I’ve learned to adapt and stay optimistic. I believe deeply in my business, my brand, and in what Tlazo brings to the community. Every obstacle has only reinforced my conviction that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tlazo Home?
Tlazo Home is a curated design space rooted in heritage and storytelling. The name “Tlazo,” from the Nahuatl language of the Aztec/Mexica, means “dear” or “precious”, a tribute to my Mexican roots and a reminder that the most meaningful pieces are the ones we hold dear in our homes.
Our collection brings together handcrafted accessories, antiques, and one of a kind objects. Many are created in collaboration with artisans in Mexico, where traditional craft meets contemporary design, while others are sourced through travel, auctions, and local makers in Dallas. Each piece, whether a hand-blown glass hurricane, a Portuguese throw, or a centuries-old chair is chosen to create a dialogue between cultures and eras, making home feel both beautiful and soulful.
At its heart, Tlazo is about connection to heritage, to craft, and to the joy of living with objects that tell stories.
What does success mean to you?
For a long time, I thought success was about being rich. Over time, I’ve realized that for me, success looks very different. It’s seeing my vision come to life, creating a space that brings joy to others, and making people feel loved, seen, and important. Success is when Tlazo helps someone make their home feel more like themselves.
At the end of the day, success is about making life better for myself, my family, my community, and the people who walk through my doors. Of course, I won’t say no to financial success, but the real reward is knowing I’m building something meaningful.
