Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with MONICA JOHNSON-WHITE of MidCities-HEB

We’re looking forward to introducing you to MONICA JOHNSON-WHITE. Check out our conversation below.

Hi MONICA, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My first 90 minutes of the day begins with prayer, meditation and a brisk walk of maybe 30-40 minutes. I have learned since our previous interview that caring for myself is just as important as caring for others. It feels self sometimes but I am striving to be the best version of me which requires prioritizing my mental, spiritual and physical well being.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Monica Johnson-White a Registered Nurse and owner of the Lighthouse Senior Livings and Lighthouse Lodge Residential Care.
We have six locations throughout the DFW offering residential care to seniors.
Our rally cry is… We love our seniors. Everything that we do is based on that statement. That’s the most special thing about us… love. And it shows every single day.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
That’s a really great question… I was a big mouth girl from the backwoods of Brandon Mississippi with a lot of grit and grind spinning around in my both my head and heart. I have always had a strong sense of self and who I am as a person. Growing up, I think I expressed it prematurely, which either drew others to me or pushed them away. Nevertheless, I am proud of the fact that I have always shown up as me.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The beautiful thing about me is that I have no fear. Fear equals failure and I’m not going to fail at anything I put my hands to do. I will not fail. I may fall but falling and failing are two different things.
I am free to take risks, speak truth, and chase what matters without being shackled by “what ifs.”

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
A belief I used to hold tightly was that generosity should be unconditional—that giving to others, no matter their effort or intentions, was always the right thing to do. I thought that kindness meant never questioning whether someone was willing to work hard or take responsibility for their own growth.
Now, I believe in compassionate boundaries. Helping someone should uplift them, not shield them from accountability. Support is most meaningful when it’s paired with encouragement to grow, strive, and contribute.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Oh Yes! I wanted to move to Texas, get married, have another baby, become a Director of Nursing and live happily ever after… or so I thought. I accomplished all of that and still had missing parts. I wanted to do more to help the elderly while honoring the life of my first husband that passed.
I chased the dream, checked every box, and still felt that quiet tug—that deeper calling that hadn’t been fulfilled.
I have now grown into someone who realized that success isn’t just about titles or milestones—it’s about impact, purpose, and legacy.
