Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Joela Tate of Desoto Tx

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Joela Tate. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Joela , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
This is a great question. Its funny to me when I have to stop and ask myself did I eat today lol. I often times get so consumed in my work whether its a cake or treat order or preparing for an event I find myself forgetting to eat or not even remembering what I ate for the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello sweets and treats fam, Im Joela the owner of Mommys Touch by Joela and Jewels of Jo’Elz Events and Design. I create unique custom desserts to compliment any special moment celebrated in your life. From anniversaries, engagement proposals, baby showers, birthdays, corporate events. If the occasion calls for cake, treats, balloons or decorations, I offer my clients a one stop shop for a complete “Jeweled Experience”.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I grew up as a foster child from the age of 12 until I was 17yrs old. My foster parents believed greatly in being consistent and working hard to get the results you want. I was involved in various extracurricular activities. From community and school choir where we traveled a lot to perform, volunteering at the local nursing home, drill team, cheerleading, flag girl in my Highschool band and a very involved member of our local boys and girls club. Here I also participated in the choir, and was part of several clubs within the club. I remember. the director of the club always encouraging me and putting me in front of different audiences of people. We traveled quite a bit too and I was often selected to compete for Youth of the Year Scholarships which required an essay submission about my story and why I felt I was the best candidate. She used to tell me how bright I was and that I had a cheerful spirit. I remember her saying I was always smiling even when she knew I was facing some difficult moments in life. My foster parents would also say the same things. Reminding me how smart I was and how things came to me easily. I remember being quite the talker too lol, I always had something to say always had to have the last word lol. She later passed while I was still in care and I had the opportunity to get to thank her for taking me in and teaching and showing me the fundamentals of life, having structure and the importance of family orientation. Their belief in me and moments of correction when I needing redirecting provided a platform for me to hold my head up and know that I had what it took to be a leader and become whatever I put my mind to being. I left the states care at 17 and experienced adulthood very fast. I got my first job at Walmart and small apartment with a best friend. I have not seen or experienced anything too impossible for me since.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Never considered giving up as an option. I knew that if I wanted something to happen I had to make that possible. And the faith I have in The Father keep me going no matter what I face. I’ve always known I was favored and by His grace I would be okay

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Most importantly my family and friends would say that I am a peacemaker. I do not like chaos or confusion. I have always been that way. Im the one who’s expected to figure it out or propose a better way. My best friend tells me all the time im very optimistic. I love to think of the brighter side of things

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
Ive taught myself to do what is necessary so that I never have to face regrets. I do what I feel is the right thing even if its uncomfortable for me. Therefore I know what is expected of me and should have no reason to feel like I didn’t try my best
