We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jay Maggio. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Jay, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think most people really don’t understand how the art business works. There are many collectors that truly know the business but many people, specially those that are new to collecting art don’t understand how the gallery business works.
In most situations, specially in my situation I am represented by several galleries and as a result I supply them with inventory of my paintings on consignment. What some people don’t understand is that each of these galleries maintain an inventory of my paintings throughout the year and they can contact the gallery at anytime to look over the inventory and make a selection. Some people think that I only sell when I have a show/exhibit at one of the galleries.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a full time artist. I create paintings of oil on canvas. My subject matter are landscapes focusing on trees. I’d like to think that I have a unique style that I refer to as my own version of impressionism. I love color and love playing with color creating appealing color combinations with a great amount of detail. I have two styles of paintings, my more “Traditional” style usually incorporates a solid sky with pointillist like detail applied to the trees and field. I sometimes apply very unusual and unnatural colors combinations for this style of paintings. “DeGraphi” is my other style of painting that is far more impressionist with some people often making a comparison to Van Gogh and other impressionists. “DeGraphi’ is an acronym for “detail graphics” meaning that I will using a wide array of various types of intricate detail to create the sky and the fields covering the entire canvas with detail. One of my favorite new color combinations that I have been working on lately is the use of a vibrant blue for the entire tree set against a deep purple and violet blue sky and field.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Integrity and prejudice. I have a low tolerance for dishonesty and discrimination. I do believe that in regards to these issues that people can change. I think I have personally gone through this process at times in my life.
I think you will know when someone changes and that’s what restores them. However, unfortunately there are some things people may say or do that once they have done them they can’t very well be reversed. You know when this happens and for me I think it’s best to cut ties or create a lot of distance between you and them.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Complicated relationships with family members. I have helped heal myself by creating distance.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
“Karma”. I am not sure that you cannot prove that Karma is real but it is clearly obvious that many people don’t believe in Karma in today’s world, otherwise I clearly think they would be using better judgement. I know of people that lets just say have not been very nice and later in life have been very challenged with problems either with themselves or people close to them. I wonder when bad things happen to me what have I done wrong. Just try and always be a good person, that is what I believe to be true!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
My motto has long been “make the world a better place for others you and you will have made the world a better place for yourself”. I don’t think most people understand this. As I say often, “just be a good person”.
