We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Kenya Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenya, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. I am currently learning how to walk while recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). I have a Ph. D. in Biomedical Science so I clearly have the intelligence. I work so hard in therapy everyday and all of my therapists past and present can tell you that so I clearly have the energy. It was emphasized to me today that it matters the most what you do when no one is watching. I am learning that learning how to walk again requires the upmost integrity.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dr. Kenya Moore. I am the Founder and CEO of Rooted in STEM. That is currently my full time job since due to a traumatic accident on February 19, 2023. I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). I find my organization interesting because I earned my Ph. D. in Biomedical Science while studying in a scientific lab focused on neurological health conditions. When I finished earning my Ph. D. I was diagnosed with my own neurologic health condition.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, the person that taught me the most about hard work was my mom, Ms. Cafea Harrell. She taught me since I could remember that everything I receive in life is earned. Nothing is given.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Keep going even when it gets challenging. Sometimes it may be hard to keep going, but if you keep going you will see why it was worth it.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My nonprofit, Rooted in STEM. I am incredibly committed to Rooted in STEM and believe in its endless possibilities and value. I am currently in the third year of Rooted in STEM existing and the longer it takes the more invested I become in it!
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell the story of how resilient I was. Life has not been a crystal stair. I think most people can say that. Although, regardless of how hard life got, I was harder.
