An Inspired Chat with Zach Anderson

Zach Anderson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Zach, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Followed my dream…
I’ve always been into art—in any form. Music, creating—whatever it may be. We started our family at a young age, so I always felt like I had to do something that made good money, had insurance, and provided a steady paycheck we could rely on.

At the beginning of 2024, I was given a $2 raise—and then laid off the very next day. I struggled with what to do next. I didn’t want to keep doing the same kind of work. I hated it, even though it paid well and had great benefits.

Fortunately, I found people who were willing to give me a chance. They took me in and taught me the art of tattooing. I did my apprenticeship at a shop in Fort Worth, and now I’m starting my 7th month on my own.

Yes, it’s been stressful at times—but I’ve found more joy in this than anything I’ve ever done.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Zach Anderson, also known as Sleepy Zach or Skucci to others. I’m a tattoo artist based in Fort Worth, Texas, specializing in neo-traditional and black and grey work with a bold, graffiti-inspired edge. Every piece I create is rooted in passion and authenticity.

Alongside tattooing, I also own Skucci Skateboards—a locally owned skate brand offering professionally made decks that represent creativity, hustle, and local culture.

Right now, I’m focused on growing both my tattooing and brand , building community, and turning my love for art and skating into something bigger than myself.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Without a doubt, my relationship with my wife has had the biggest impact on how I see myself. We’ve been together since high school—going on 19 years—and she’s been by my side through every high and low. She believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself, and that kind of support hits deep. She’s my biggest fan, my partner, and the one who keeps me grounded and pushing forward.

On top of that, being a dad to our three kids changed everything for me. No matter how much I might doubt myself or feel like I’m falling short, they look at me like I’m the king of the world. The way they see me—with love, pride, and excitement—reminds me of who I really am. They make me feel like the coolest person alive, and that keeps me going more than anything else.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t doubt yourself—no matter what. Keep chasing what you truly want, even if it feels out of reach. It might take more work, and the path won’t always be clear, but doing something you actually love is worth every bit of it in the end.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I would say becoming a successful tattoo artist and being able to live life and support my family on the things things that I built and not someone else

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I’ll always regret not chasing my passions sooner. I waited until my mid to late 30s to finally go after what I truly love. I wish I had trusted myself earlier—but I’m grateful I made the leap when I did. Something about not having to clock in for someone else hits different
