We recently had the chance to connect with Chandler Cooper and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chandler , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
I think I’ve always been a pretty impulsive “yes and” kind of guy!
As far as me acting fast goes, over the last few years I have really taken a second before speaking- not in a “hot take” kind of way but to really speak my mind so I didn’t contradict myself or speak on anything without having a formed opinion.
Once I started pursuing the arts in the DFW area I realized there are a lot of moments where if I am fast to say how I feel it won’t be something I can be proud of so I’m very good now about holding my tongue and properly forming my thoughts. Everyday with this is a win for ol “loud mouth Chan” (I’ve never been called that)
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chandler Cooper. I’m an alt pop artist from Cleburne Texas who has been making videos online to market my music for over 10 years. Right now I’m finishing up my second project “lol I swim real good I swear it” where I reflect on the formative years of growing up in Cleburne with no connections and no experience into building (and burning out on) a lasting legacy on social media and hopefully- my music.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I could do anything. There are certain things I CANT do. And that’s ok. I always thought I could do whatever I put my mind to. It’s not really the case, but I can work hard at establishing myself, and put the hours into better myself and my art.
Macklemore once said “the greats weren’t great because at birth they could paint the greats were great because they paint a lot” and that’s something that resonated with me. I can’t put every second of everyday into my art and be an NBA player. I don’t know if that makes sense. I will run this through chat gpt now to make it cohesive. Lol jk
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t hit the juul! Dont hit the vape! You’re gonna be addicted for a decade! PLEASE PUT 50 BUCKS IN BITCOIN I love you. You’re worth it.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
You have to write all your stuff by yourself. You can’t have collaborators. I was very involved in hiphop and while it made me (in my opinion) excellent at song structure, it also established some pretty stubborn bad habits in me.
My buddy Jay who also produces a lot of my stuff once stopped me in a song recording session where I was getting frustrated- (it was my song Eye To Eye. If you’ve heard the song it’ll make sense why it was frustrating) and he asked me “are you having fun” to which I replied “no” and he said “ok let’s take a break. If it’s not fun let’s call it for a few” and that’s when we established fortnite breaks. If it’s not fun and taking your peace, you’re missing the big picture of being an artist and your musics energy WILL reflect it.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think with the music it’s often brushed over that the songs are all connected and if you listen in the order of the projects, it’s the story of my life and my deepest thoughts
