We’re looking forward to introducing you to Christan Van Slyke. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Christan, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes! I would without a doubt hire me or someone like me! I have endless dedication to the goal at hand, am hard working and loyal to the team. I always do my best to lead by example and operate with integrity, which is a rare find these days in the film industry. I’d want a person with these qualities on my team any day of the week!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an award-winning, multi-optioned screenwriter based in Texas, with well over 800 festival awards for screenwriting/filmmaking. I’ve been in the industry since 2008 and have been the staff screenwriter for seven production companies. I have many short/feature screenplays available for option. I am quite accustomed to writing on assignment, and also have many projects in development that are seeking producing collaborators and/or funding. I enjoy exploring all genres as a writer, but my personal favorites and specialities are: dark comedy, drama, romcom, post-apocalyptic. I am also a mom of 4, who loves education, fitness, gardening, health and nature!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I would say real bonds, regarding any type of relationship, are built on integrity, mutual reciprocal efforts and trust! Foregoing any of these will likely quickly weaken and potentially break that bond. It’s my belief that actions will always speak louder than words. If someone means what they say, their efforts will reflect that (whatever the situation or relationship may be.)
It may be difficult to restore a broken bond after this, but I don’t believe it’s impossible. I think consistent efforts toward healing/repairing what was broken and time would potentially restore a broken friendship, relationship, etc. However, both parties must mutually want this restoration to happen for it to work. This applies to friendships, romantic relationships, work relationships, across the board.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Be patient and kind to yourself. All these things you’re wanting to accomplish take time! Nothing ever worth while comes easy. We live in an instant gratification society now unfortunately and often times beat ourselves up over tiny set backs or failures. We see those around us succeeding quicker or more easily than we do and automatically assume we’re a failure. We sometimes jump ship before deliverance! Comparison is the thief of joy- T. Roosevelt.
Perhaps it’s time we see these “set backs” as opportunities for growth, improvements and preparation for what’s better to come. Breakthrough is coming and we must focus on the end goal! We must retrain our way of thinking. We focus on the negatives too much which ends up oftentimes holding us back.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would likely say my Christian beliefs/faith (integrity, honesty, loyalty, etc), my family and getting my stories out into the world are most important to me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would immediately stop being so concerned about how others view me, my choices, my career, etc. We get so easily distracted by social media- comparing ourselves, basing our self worth and value on how many likes we get, or how others perceive us, etc. If we knew how little time we really had left, we’d probably just focus on the goals we have in our hearts and push forward regardless who supports us or what others think. To be honest, we would likely reach success a lot sooner if we don’t allow ourselves to be distracted by such things. Stay focused on what’s truly important, our real purpose and on those who are truly there for you.
