Aryn Michelle shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Aryn Michelle, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I’ve been writing a textbook about songwriting for almost two years now. I found an editor and she’s 2/3rds of the way through editing my book. Writing a book was a huge challenge for me as I’ve never tried to write one before and it’s SO many words to manage. (I’m more accustomed to managing the lyrics for just a song!) I’m proud to say my editor is enjoying the book and continues to give me feedback that she thinks this will be a very helpful and informative text for future students.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a faith-based, eclectic pop singer songwriter that has been releasing music for almost twenty years. I make music for people of faith who are looking for deep dives into scripture and biblical lives wrapped in music that “doesn’t sound like Christian” music. I’ve currently got a full slate of projects I’m releasing: A four song acoustic EP called “in time of need” will be out in Sept 2026, a four song Christmas EP is coming November 2026, and the current full length album that I’m releasing in singles from will be complete in 2026. This project is called BLOODLINE and it’s about the lives of the women in the genealogy of Jesus.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe that in order to be a productive and influential artist you have to do things the “industry” way. I now know that every artist creates their own journey and no two journeys look the same. There are no rules, you don’t have to listen to or capitulate to gatekeepers. What’s important is to make the art that’s truly on your heart.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I am so thankful for my songwriting community at Art House Dallas. I have a group of friends that I have been meeting with monthly for years. We share songs and life together. They have seen my music grow and change through the seasons. At our most recent meeting, one of my friends said to me “I’ve come to understand who you are. You are a conformist in some ways but there’s something inside of you that also wants to rebel against who the world tells you that you have to be.” It was so touching to have a friend who has listened to my music over the years understand who I am and what I wrestle with as an artist and a person.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I believe the biggest lie that artists (and listeners) should push back against is that the most “successful” music is what makes the most money. Attached to this problem is defining the success or goodness of any music or art by what garners the most attention, has the most streams or makes the most “noise.” Fame and money do not define the goodness of art. If anything, they distract and hinder it.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Social media. I appreciate how it helps me interact with and encourage people all over the world, but I give in too easily to the distraction that it creates in my life. I’d rather spend more time making beautiful things and being with people face to face.
