We recently had the chance to connect with Marcia Carroll and have shared our conversation below.
Marcia, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
There are many valiant virtues, but without integrity, I don’t think any of the rest matter. Integrity is the bedrock upon which honesty, courage and accountability thrive. We’re living at a time when its worth has never been more evident, and the need to preserve it, more vital.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a filmmaker. I began my career as an actress, which I still enjoy, but most of my work now is focused on writing & directing independent films. The award-winning feature documentary I wrote, directed and produced on behalf of The Grace Loncar Foundation, LOSING GRACE FINDING HOPE, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Tubi & YouTube. A second award-winning film I wrote, directed and starred in, JADED, is expected to be streaming soon, and I’m currently in pre-production to direct a comedy I wrote, ARLINGTON HALL, scheduled to shoot this fall. There’s nothing more gratifying than being in control of your own creative vision from start to finish. It’s what keeps me going… in addition to travelling & hanging with the ones I love.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
At the risk of sounding contrived, the relationship that most shaped me is the one I developed with myself. I grew up in the midst of a lot of emotional dysfunction. As a result, I entered adulthood ill-equipped with no support system or tools for success in place. I had to figure it out by learning how to trust my own instincts. While it definitely set me back timewise, it forced me to focus, set goals and discover meaningful relationships on my own.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Trust your gut; it never lies. And if you have any doubts about what it feels like to connect with that internal guide, then work on it until you do, because connecting with and trusting your instincts are your superpower.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I have two main philosophies. One is to live spherically, in many directions. Strategically juggling different aspects of life simultaneously pays off by keeping boredom at bay. Secondly, I’m committed to honoring the mantra, “to thine own self be true.” Only when we connect authentically to self, can we be honest in both our relationships and our work. These two belief systems have served me without fail, personally and professionally.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying over things I cannot change or control.
