Conversations with Lourdes Lavalle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Lavalle.

Hi Lourdes, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Mexican-American visual artist, born in México City, México. I lived in Houston, Texas for 20 years before relocating to Dallas in 2021.
With a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Business, my professional career was focused in international financial institutions.
Since a young age, I was always interested in art, being a self taught artist. However, it was in Houston that I chose to pursue my lifelong passion for art and painting. I received a formal art education at The Glassell School of Art of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH).
I am a founding member of the Latin American Women Artists of Houston (LAWAHouston), with the leadership of renowned artist Arielle Masson, organization I continue to actively support. I am also a member of the East Dallas Art District and the Visual Arts League Allen.
My work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Texas and across the United States.
I currently work in my studio at Art on Main Gallery (4428 Main St, Dallas, TX).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the main challenges I’ve faced in my career as an artist has been gaining exposure for my work and connecting with galleries.
Relocating has also brought its own difficulties-having to rebuild relationships and find my place within new art communities. However, I’ve come to see these challenges as opportunities: chances to meet inspiring artists, expand my creative network, learn from others, and develop meaningful friendships along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artistic practice centers on geometric abstraction, primarily using oil on canvas. I work in medium to large scale formats.
My paintings are characterized by the interplay of shapes, spaces, lines, and colors.

With each piece, I intend to create a dynamic interaction between my artwork and the viewer, inviting the observer on a visual journey where geometric complexity, structure and abstraction converge, exploring the intricate interplay between geometry and the cosmos through the lens of abstract oil painting, a visual meditation on the fundamental structures that govern the universe. This translates the complexities of cosmic phenomena into a language of form and color. Through bold lines and harmonious compositions, the observer is invited to see beyond the mere geometry of our surroundings and to connect with the deeper, often unseen, forces that shape our existence.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is creating a piece of art that reflects my thoughts-where I am emotionally in a given moment, my relationship with nature, my space and how I perceive the universe. Equally important is that the artwork invites the viewer to see things through their own lens, to dive into the painting, and to connect with their own emotions and inner world.
