Inspiring Conversations with Briana Johnson of Sweet Bri’s Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Johnson.

Hi Briana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started baking as a hobby when I was just a kid. As I got older, and better, I became known as the baker of my family and friend groups. I went to college and studied Psycjology with the intent of becoming a counselor/therapist of some sort. When I decided to take a break between my undergrad and Masters program, I began working as a Case Manager for individuals with developmental disabilities. One of my coworkers tried a dessert I baked and told me that I should be a full-time baker.

Her words stuck with me and i started baking as a side business. People started coming to me from all over and my bakery was suddenly taking off! In 2015, I appeared on Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship Season 2 and the entire country was watching me bake! This was not my best work, so when I came home I completely revamped my business with a new name, logo, new recipes, and a new website.

Sweet Bri’s Bakery was now born! I committed to making desserts that people were more than happy to spend their money on. I made sure everything looked as good as it tasted. This really helped my business grow and in 2021 I was able to quit my full-time job and make baking my career. Fast-forward to today, and Sweet Bri’s Bakery has been my full-time job for 4 years.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since my bakery is home-based, I have to still convince people that I am worth spending their money with. A lot of people still look at home businesses as the “cheap” option or where they can go to haggle and get a deal. I’m often having to explain to people that I still have the same bills to pay and a roof to keep over my head.

We’ve been impressed with Sweet Bri’s Bakery , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sweet Bri’s Bakery grew from a hobby to a full-time career because of my love for baking. I connect the most with people through the things I make and I try to bring people desserts and treats that are traditional with a little twist. I specialize in custom cakes, over-the-top cookies, and drool-worthy desserts that make people smile. I love sharing the behind-the-scenes magic as i make my sourdough bread or transform a simple cake into a thing of beauty.

What are your plans for the future?
Texas Cottage laws recently got a big upgrade and I am now able to sell wholesale. I’m looking forward to getting my bakes into cafes, bookstores, and other markets where I can reach more people.
