Inspiring Conversations with Brett Rather of Mollo Rather Custom Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Rather.

Brett, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got my start in construction at a young age, doing sheetrock work and helping build churches through ministry projects. After college, I spent some time in the oil business before transitioning into remodels and flips. I then worked for a local custom builder for several years to really learn the trade. From there, I started building spec homes with a partner, which grew into land development and eventually into building everything from small-scale projects to very high-end custom estate homes. At 35, I’m grateful to be doing what I love every day. We have some projects underway I’m proud to have my name on.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, especially in the beginning. Starting my own business in 2023 was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I went out on my own with zero jobs lined up, two young kids, and a wife depending on me. It took a lot of faith and grit to build a pipeline, win work in a competitive market, and get things moving. Along the way, I’ve also had to navigate COVID, supply chain chaos, rising interest rates, and big swings in pricing. But each challenge pushed me to grow stronger, lean into my relationships, and build a reputation for taking care of my clients and trade partners. Today, I’m proud to say the business is thriving and we’re building some incredible homes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re a boutique, fully custom design–build firm that takes clients from concept to completion. Every home we build is one-of-a-kind and tailored to the people who will live in it. Because we keep our team lean and focused, we’re able to give clients a hands-on experience where the details matter and nothing gets overlooked. We collaborate with architects from across the country and specialize in delivering exceptional, high-end custom homes. At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to create a seamless, stress-free process and a finished product that exceeds expectations.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my success comes down to being relationship-driven and always doing the right thing. Too many builders get caught up in ego or cutting corners to protect profits. For me, it’s the opposite. I come from a customer service background, and I believe in putting people first—clients, trades, and partners. That means treating our trades with respect, making sure they’re paid on time, and making our clients the top priority every single day. Even if it costs me more, I’ll choose the option that builds trust and keeps the relationship strong. At the end of the day, doing right by people is what keeps our business growing.
