Meet Sierra Preston of Gloss & Toss Suite, Fort Worth Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Preston.

Sierra Preston

Hi Sierra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started cosmetology school in 2019 in Lubbock Texas. I knew as soon as I toured the school I wanted to start right away. I also love the smell of a salon! I still do! Finishing school during the pandemic was a trip, for sure. But after getting my license, I moved back home to Fort Worth.
Directly after school I worked in a salon setting. This is where I fell in love with the craft as well as education within hairstyling. In these years I became a Shades EQ Specialist & Hair color Authority Certified. I also began teaching new stylist and I absolutely adore getting to teach what I am so passionate about!
The community that comes with educating, is so fun to be part of, new stylist, ready & excited to learn!

After several years working on my skills I took the leap to start my own business. It was one of the greatest risk I’ve ever taken. but oh wow, is it worth it. So worth it. I now co-own a suite with my bestie and work for myself. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Truly building something that started as ideas in you’r head and then bringing them to life is such a special feeling.
One of my favorite parts of being a hairstylist is the connection you experience with each client. When they come to support you and what you do, it means the world. Getting to see their face light up warms my heart. You get to know each clients life, you turn into friends with them. Being able to pamper clients while also being creative each day, makes for a truly beautiful career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming an independent hairstylist has by no means been easy! There is SO much to learn. I had to learn how to start my own business on the spot basically. I made a couple mistakes a long the way. haha unfortunately, that’s how business goes sometimes. But I’ve learned how to make it right and move forward each day. There’s so much more administration work that takes up a lot of time. More than just behind the chair. But this work also reminds me that I have a beautiful business that I am so lucky to have. Being my own boss means I set my schedule to how it works for me and my clients. I am so grateful for that!

In being a hairstylist, it’s been a long but rewarding road! It took me a bit longer than others to really understand hair. Don’t get me wrong, I did great work, but I always felt behind. But I kept working, Kept watching videos. Kept studying and eventually it all came together. In such a magical way. Each day is different Some weeks are great and some, you don’t have anyone on your books. But I keep going because I absolutely adore what I do each day. Even when it is hard.

You have to love it, you have to be passionate about what you’re doing. You have to be hungry to keep learning. You also have to be okay making mistakes, and growing from them. Some of by biggest mistakes have stuck with me and helped fuel me to never make that mistake again. It helps me move forward in a positive way of becoming better each day
What makes it all worth it, is the joy that comes from each client!
My clients are everything to me. I feel so much love and adoration for each person that sits in my chair. This would not be able to be such a great community without you. Thank you for the laughs and tears and stories. and allowing me to grow with you

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist, I specialize in Extensions, All Color, Dimensional Color, Haircuts and Vivids. I also offer Brazilian Blowout Services, Several hair treatments and a relaxing Shampoo & Style treatment. Extensions & Vivids are my absolute favorites I would say. There are so many options and styles to try!! I’ve done some gorgeous fashion colors on extensions before! I also love a dimensional Brunette with extensions as the pop of color.
I offer a special service where I tailor the appointment to make you feel as pampered as possible! Each service receives a consultation. I take time in my consultations to really make sure we are on the same page before starting,
I have many certifications in hair color to hair repair treatments and Haircutting!
I truly have a passion for each person I am lucky enough to work with! Each person has such beauty I love discovering.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I feel it’s important to take risks in your life. As much as it makes your heart pound & your anxiety rush. You owe it to yourself to take that leap and try! You are worth taking the risk no matter the outcome I believe making the moves forward is more important than how it ends up. Moving forward can be scary, but so can staying in the same place and not going after your dream and letting it slip by. I truly believe that if you want something, If you’re going to take that leap, you have to put everything into it. You have to WORK for it each day! You have to truly LOVE what you do. It’s so much more than just an idea. It’s figuring out what you need to do to make that idea real.
you can so do it. It’s beyond possible, if you set your sights to it, work for it and take the chance on yourself. I promise it’s so so worth the hardship and anxiety. It could be the best decision you’ve ever made. I know it has been for me!

For me this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my husband, Ryan. His love and hours of work with me have kept me sane on long nights.
As well as my friends and family that helped open the suite. And my family that continues to support me by being clients.
