An Inspired Chat with Kayla Anderson of Plano

Kayla Anderson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Kayla, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day consists of waking up around 5:30am. My husband, my dog and myself will go for an hour long walk, after which I complete 30 minutes of strength training and stretching. This physical activity first thing in the morning does wonders for my mood and energy levels throughout the day. Then I feed my dog her breakfast and get ready for the work day!

Once I’m ready, had my breakfast and got all of my clean linens prepped and folded for a day full of treatments, I’m able to head to my suite. I like to get to work an hour before my first appointment. This allows me plenty of time to set up for the day without being rushed. I will see anywhere from four to six clients in a day. These are mostly facial appointments, with a few waxing and/or tinting services sprinkled in there. I get to spend my days pampering and caring for my awesome clients. It’s always a pleasure getting to catch up with each of them at every visit.

I finish most work days at 7pm. I like to head straight home! I am quite the home body these days. My evenings are spent enjoying dinner, some outdoor time in the backyard with my husband and our dog Molly, and watching a bit of TV.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kayla Michelle Anderson, owner and founder of KMA Skin Clarity. I have been a licensed and practicing Esthetician in Texas for the last 13 years and founded KMA Skin Clarity just over 7 years ago. After spending the first few years of my career working in day spas and eventually teaching Esthetics, I knew I wanted to create a space where people could relax and let me handle their skin care. I wanted to tailor treatments specifically with my clients in mind, especially those with sensitive skin who often struggled with reactions to professional treatments.
I myself dealt with several allergic reactions throughout my Esthetics training. I knew there had to be a way for people like me to still take great care of their skin without the negative reaction.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband, Kevin. Honestly, without him I don’t think I would have started my own business. There have been several times in my life where I let the fear of failure get in the way of me trying new things. I think deep down I knew I could do it, but that uncertainty, that risk might have kept me from making the leap had he not been in my corner rooting for me and letting me know I was more than capable!

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me to appreciate the good. I say it all the time, that I’m glad I had all of the challenges and hardships I did when I was younger so that I could truly appreciate all of the good. It made every win that much more sweet. Suffering taught me to fight for me and my happiness, no matter what. Success is the reward.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would say that honesty, empathy and consideration are most important to me. These are qualities I always try my best to exude day to day, and I like to encourage the people around me to do the same. There were times as a kid and young adult that I didn’t exude these, and I always felt so horrible about it afterward. Anytime I told a lie, made a decision without considering how it affected others around me, or when I judged others without considering what they might be going through…I instantly regretted it. Exuding honesty, empathy and consideration daily is not only beneficial to those around me, but also helps me to no longer struggle with those feelings of regret or disappointment in myself.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think what my customers would miss most is the chance to relax and fully be themselves for 60 to 90 minutes each month. As cliche as it may sound, my spa is a safe space. You can talk about anything, vent about your life challenges, sleep, snore, laugh, you name it…you get to be you at KMA Skin Clarity. There are so many people going through their daily lives not getting to be their true authentic self. Maybe you constantly have to “put your game face on”, or you don’t get the chance to vent to someone with an unbiased view of your life. My clients are essentially getting a therapy session, a nap and some skin care all rolled into one appointment!
