Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Kubiak.
Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was brought up in an impoverished part of the Houston inner cities by a single mother with 8 children. Within my family system and the larger community i witnessed a myriad of social issues. Poverty and little resources often breed other social issues such as trauma, addiction, and mental health concerns. I longed for change in my life and within my community. My father valued education and instilled that with an education, we could do anything we set our minds to. Though there were so many hardships in my upbringing, I realized I was intellectually gifted, and I used my passion for knowledge as a way to elevate me from poverty. I made good grades, attended college, then went on to pursue my Masters and later my PhD in the counseling field. My ultimate goal is to start a non profit geared to helping communities like the one I grew up in. Early intervention and compassion goes along way to change anyone’s trajectory for the good. I strive to be the change I wish to see.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been bumpy, with dips, twists, turns and obstacles. But worthwhile endeavors are rarely easy to obtain. Coming from such a background, I have often been at a disadvantage, not having enough resources. Determination has been key to cultivating resilience in the face of adversity. Never quitting and having faith in myself allowed me to navigate worlds that were not set up for me to prosper in. Completing my undergraduate was particularly difficult because I did not have parental support. I worked and obtained financial aid to cover the cost of living and tuition and fees. I had to always prioritize class and work in order to stay afloat in academia, but somehow I managed to do this and still engage in social connections which also were crucial to my success. Outside of the deficits that come with having minimal resources, navigating mental issues such as depression and anxiety throughout my life was another challenge. This is where seeking help became crucial to my success.
