Life & Work with Lee Dean of Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Dean.

Hi Lee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A little bit about me:
I am a second-generation designer-art director, working nationwide via the internet. I grew up producing Slurpee cups and other items for my dad as he did projects for the former Southland Corporation (7/11). I was trained by working professionals in college who gave me superb insight into real world business and trade practices. I have since won a few awards and have worked in both ad agencies and “in-house” in corporate marketing departments. I am a member of the local design club, the D.S.V.C. https://dsvc.org/
I am a jack-of-all-trades by experience, but a branding specialist at heart. I make Brands that Last.

My slogan is, “Ideas Drive Everything”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not a smooth road. Life in the creative area is very competitive, and there are politics like in any industry. After the instability of ad agency life, I thought working “client side” would be more stable. Tenure in an agency averages about two years. Suprisingly, I was laid off more often working in-house than in agencies.

Now, as a freelancer, it’s “feast or famine” but I’m actually happier now than I have been in my career for some time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My claim to fame is the original Blockbuster Videos logo and brand. I’ve been creating brands before and since. It’s what I really love to do. Blockbuster has been a two-edged sword. It’s a logo that’s recognized worldwide, but as ownership changed over and over, they became too myopic and lost their business.
That said, the beginning of the story is interesting. Maybe that’s for another article.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am extremely introverted. That doesn’t mean I’m anti-social, but simply being with people drains my energy. But when I’m in social situations, I “turn it on” and participate, tell stories, etc. It’s funny, I miss my clients if I don’t communicate with them for a while.
