Today we’d like to introduce you to Jismy Sebastian.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in India where baking was always part of my life because my parents ran a small home bakery. I remember helping them and watching them create cakes, and those early memories stayed with me over the years. Baking always felt like something I was connected to, even if it wasn’t my main focus at first.
Even though I had baked here and there, I never thought about becoming a professional baker. That changed around my daughter’s first birthday. I wanted to make her a cake that felt just right for her — something that would make her happy. Seeing her face light up was a special moment, and it made me realize that I wanted to share that same joy with others.
From that point, baking became more than just a hobby. I started creating cakes and treats for friends and family, and eventually turned my passion into Jismy’s Sweet Creations. Today, it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to celebrate life’s moments with people through my desserts, and every order reminds me of why I started in the first place.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Balancing baking with family life, especially as a mom of two young children, has been one of the biggest challenges. There were times when I felt stretched thin, trying to give my best to both my family and my business.
Another challenge was learning how to turn my passion into a professional business. Baking for fun and baking for others are very different — there’s the pressure of getting every detail right, meeting deadlines, and making sure each order brings happiness to someone’s special day. During this time, my husband and both our families have been my biggest support. They encouraged me, helped with the kids, and cheered me on whenever I doubted myself, making the journey much more manageable.I’ve also been incredibly grateful for the support of family friends — their encouragement and help along the way has meant so much.
Even with the struggles, I’ve grown so much along the way. Every challenge taught me something — about time management, creativity, and perseverance. And seeing the joy my cakes and treats bring to people makes every obstacle worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main focus is creating custom cakes, but I also make cupcakes, cake pops, and other sweet treats to complement them. I love making each creation personal and meaningful, whether it’s for a birthday, wedding, or any special celebration. My goal is always to deliver something that brings joy and makes the occasion even more memorable.
What sets me apart is the love and care I put into every dessert. I don’t just focus on making something look beautiful — I want each cake to tell a story or capture a special moment. I enjoy listening to my clients’ ideas and bringing them to life in a way that feels unique and personal.
What I’m most proud of is seeing people’s reactions when they receive their cakes. The smiles, excitement, and happiness make all the effort worth it. Being able to turn a childhood passion into something that spreads joy to others is incredibly fulfilling for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck has played a small but meaningful role in my journey. After I moved to the U.S. following my marriage, I found myself in a new environment with new opportunities. Some moments felt like luck — meeting the right people, receiving encouragement at the right times, or finding clients who appreciated my work.
At the same time, I know that hard work and persistence matter more than luck. Starting a business in a new country had its challenges, but every obstacle became a lesson that helped me grow and improve. I’ve learned to take what comes my way, good or bad, and turn it into something positive.
Overall, I feel grateful for the support of my husband, family, and friends, and for the small “lucky” moments that gave me confidence to keep going. But really, it’s been a combination of effort, love for what I do, and those little strokes of luck that have shaped where I am today.
