Today we’d like to introduce you to Marta Rozanich.
Hi Marta, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always felt the need the create, starting with sewing with my grandmother, who was a seamstress. I made my first dress by myself at the age 13. I began my undergraduate studies at UT Austin in textiles and clothing, but felt it was a bit limiting. I decided to change schools and studies to Environmental Design at Texas A&M. I wasn’t sure if architecture was exactly right for me, but Environmental Design was a bit more broad- for instance, I got to take floral art, art, and photography as part of my studies.
After one year at Texas A&M, I realized architecture was my calling and decided early on that I would be going for my Master’s. I attended Arizona State University for my Master’s in Architecture and spent 8 years living and working in Phoenix. It was there that I found my design voice and learned how to live and build in extreme climates along with the importance of passive green design.
I became a licensed architect in 2005 and moved back to Ft. Worth to be closer to family in 2006. Working for a large local firm, I managed the construction of the Omni Condominium project in Ft. Worth.
In 2010, I decided to focus on my own firm, konstrukcio studio. In 2018, I became a licensed Interior Designer. My firm is a full service architect, interiors, and design firm, focusing on modern yet warm residential and boutique commercial design and sustainable projects.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d be lying if I said it was a smooth or easy road. Several moves across the country, passing all 9 portions of my architecture licensing exam, starting my own business and weathering a few economic downturns along with a global pandemic have all been challenging. I’ve had to learn not only how to become a better architect, but also how to run a small business, how to hire the right people to help me get to where I am and how to fund the process. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but each one taught me valuable lessons and has made me a better architect and interior designer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
When setting up my firm, it was important for me to convey that my work was more than just architecture. It encompasses architecture and interiors and I’ve even done some furniture design. That’s where the studio part comes from. The word konstrukcio is a Hungarian word for construction. My parents are Hungarian refugees, so it was important for me to incorporate my heritage in my firm’s name.
I’m known for work on Mid Century Modern homes. I’ve had a passion for them before I even knew what they were. I remember growing up in Wedgewood and seeing some homes that just clicked with me. Turns out they were Mid Century Moderns. When we moved back to Ft. Worth, we saw a Mid Century Modern home from the outside and knew we wanted to buy it before we even saw the inside. We’ve lived in it for 19 years now.
I’m also known for is my warm take on modern design. I want to create to spaces for how my clients live, not for how I think they should live. I pride myself in taking the time to get to know how my clients move through their spaces, allowing me to create truly bespoke designs. My designs are on the softer side of modern, with light being a major design element.
I’m honored to have won a few local AIA and magazine awards and a LUX redhome award. However, I’m most proud of the trust clients place in me to design their homes. I’ve had a few repeat clients, allowing me to do some work in Roatan and Mexico.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I fell in love with gymnastics at the age of three and spent 10 years spending most of my free time in the gym. Gymnastics taught me to persevere through the hard times and the failures. It taught me how to face my fears and over come them. I am the youngest of three kids and a gen x’er. I was your typical latchkey kid, with a single mom as a parent. I learned to be independent at a pretty young age. I think that’s helped me excel in a traditionally male dominated field.
