Community Highlights: Meet John Taylor of GNJ Pickleball

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Taylor.

Hi John , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
GNJ was started after I became addicted to pickleball. Looking for a new social activity, I (the J) found out about pickleball on a cruise ship. My wife, Natalie, (the N) and I started playing as soon as we returned from the cruise, and we haven’t stopped since. A year in, I had become a certified instructor and played multiple tournaments when I was approached by my brother-in-law, Greg (the G), about opening our own facility. With the sport growing at a rapid pace, we wanted to create a community that welcomed everyone. Our main goal was to create a safe space for everyone, regardless of their skill level, to play pickleball while making connections that extend beyond the sport. Operationally, I took the approach from a player’s perspective for safety and programming. The first year had its ups and downs, but we made sure not to deter from our mission to bring more people to the pickleball community. Each day we strive to continue to build not just GNJ, but our community’s love for this amazing sport!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but with determination and the support of our amazing members, we have been successful.
A few of our major struggles include:
1. Cooling down building that is 9000 square feet, in the heat of the summer, while trying to increase memberships.
2. Adding overhead cost by providing balls for customers due to GNJ’s unique court colors.
3. Building the programming that met the needs of members and non-members.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about GNJ Pickleball?
As part owner responsible for programming and coaching, I specialize in being on the court as a player, coach, and fierce competitor. On average, I’m on the court for 11 hours a day, seven days per week. I’m known for listening to what people want and making the necessary adjustments that makes sense for all, but also the voice of reason in uncomfortable situations. Prior to owning a pickleball facility, I was a transportation business consultant, helping companies save money by analyzing trends and data. That has set me apart from others since I attempt to think through logical solutions in all situations and areas of the business and how I coach others. Brand wise, I am most proud of the local community that we have created. I am proud to be part of a group of people that embody our vision and that go into different areas to promote and be the true meaning of pickleball and what GNJ stands for. Our facility is open 7a-11p every day. We welcome members and non-members to come out for social and fundraising events, court reservations, private/semi-private/group lessons, or competitive tournaments to put their skills on display. We love for everyone to have a good time, even though you want to win. FUN and COMMUNITY is always at the top of the list.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that our city is just a small part of Parker County and that we welcome everyone and treat each other with respect and dignity. The thing I like least about our city is that we tend to have the stigma of being too far away from civilization, which is not necessarily true.
