Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAnna Golsan.
Hi DeAnna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Currently I serve as the Senior (and only) Pastor of Disciples Christian Church. I have served here since I graduated from Bright Divinity College with my Mastor of Divinity degree.
Prior to this, I have had a varied work history. I worked Animal Control for Williamson County which required me to become a Deputy. I am not meant to be a law enforcement officer. Following that I came to the Dallas area, working for The SPCA of Texas. I served there as Animal Control for University Park, Supervisor of Animal Control for Collin Country. After animal control, I continued at the SPCA as the manager of Repeats (thier thrift store), then set up Paws and Presents for them at Northpark mall.
Upon leaving the SPCA I worked as a Financial Aid Counselor for Parker College of Chiropractic. There I was informed that in order to keep my job, I must get a degree. This was terrifying for me as I did terribly in school. But I went and thrived. I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Brookhaven, became chapter President and was then inducted into PTK Hall of Honor.
It was during my time at Brookhaven that I received my call into Ministry. I was pretty sure that God had made a mistake as the image in my head of a Minister was a far cry from myself. But the path was cleared. I received a full ride scholarship from Texas Christian University and then was accepted as a Special Admitance Student into Brite.
My time in ministry has led me places where I was never expecting to go. In my third year I was asked to walk with a mother whose son was on death row. Between her story and my experience with his execution I became a vocal supporter of ending the death penalty, speaking at Texas House hearings and through several other places.
My life is full. I serve a church that challenges me to find new and different ways to lead and grow, have my family around me, and am grateful.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, this has not been a smooth road. It was my disbelief in my own talents and capabilities that caused the greatest roadblocks. It is only when I have given up control that the road has smoothed…except for the occasional bump or two
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I very much enjoy being a Minister. I consider myself a good story-teller and am known in my congregation for bringing people in the bible to life as I give my sermon through their eyes. This is especially true for Lent/Easter and Advent/Christmas.
I enjoy creating Worship Arts, such as my stoles, banners in the church and vignettes that hopefully bring the sermon to life
I am most proud of the fact that I am good with people who are in the end of life process. I have been told that I am “good with death” . As it is a high honor to be with someone in those last moments of life, I consider that quite a complement.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I guess what I would share is to always be open to new things. I was 53 when I received my calling into ministry and if there was ever a role that I would never have thought to have as mine, that is it. But everything in my life has led to this. Every mistake, every wrong turn and every fear has been used to make me who I am today. I have life experiences that many ministers don’t and that allows me to open myself to many. I am an accepting and affirming person, ready to hold out a hand to those who have been hurt by religion for who they love or what they are.
