We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matt Yigit. Check out our conversation below.
Matt, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I would say I am walking a path, but it is one I have been paving as I go. Starting Tiles Workshop was not about following a pre-mapped route. It was about trusting creativity, resilience, and community to guide me. At times it feels like wandering, but every turn has led me closer to building something meaningful: a place where people create, connect, and carry home more than just a lamp.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Matt, and I am the founder of Tiles Workshop. What started as a passion for mosaic art has grown into a creative movement that brings people together through hands-on cultural experiences. At our workshops, guests are not just making lamps or candle holders, they are building memories, discovering their creativity, and connecting with one another in meaningful ways.
Tiles Workshop is about more than art. It is about creating spaces where people slow down, share laughter, and walk away with a sense of accomplishment and joy. We blend culture, community, and creativity into each experience, whether it is with families, friends, or corporate teams.
While mosaic lamps are our signature, they are only the beginning. We are expanding into new formats and experiences that will continue to inspire and uplift. My vision is to make Tiles Workshop a place where people return again and again, knowing that each experience will be unique, impactful, and unforgettable.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I realized I could create something with my own hands and imagination. As a kid, I loved building things, whether it was with blocks, paper, or scraps I found around the house. I remember the moment when others would look at what I made and say, “Wow, that’s amazing.” It gave me the confidence to see that creativity could influence people and bring joy. That feeling stuck with me and became the foundation of what I do today at Tiles Workshop—helping others experience that same sense of empowerment when they create something beautiful and meaningful themselves.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that held me back the most was the fear of failure. For years, I stayed in the safety of a corporate career because it felt predictable and secure, even though I knew it was not where my heart was. Walking away from a stable paycheck to build something completely new was terrifying. I worried about what people would think, about whether I would succeed, and about the risks I was taking for my family.
But I learned that fear only has power when you let it stop you. Once I took that first step, I discovered that failure is not the opposite of success—it is part of the process. Every obstacle has taught me something valuable and made me more resilient. Today, I see fear as a signal that I am growing and stepping into something bigger than myself.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
One truth that is foundational in my life is that creativity is not reserved for a select few. Everyone has the ability to create, and when people give themselves permission to try, they often surprise themselves. Another truth I hold close is that relationships are more valuable than achievements. Success without connection feels empty, but when you create something meaningful with others, it has lasting impact. I rarely say these things out loud, but they guide the way I live and the way I shape the experiences at Tiles Workshop.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I see people fully present in the moment during a workshop. There is something powerful about watching someone forget about their phone, their stress, or their to-do list and simply enjoy creating. The quiet focus, the shared laughter, and the glow of the finished piece remind me that peace is not about the absence of challenges but about finding meaning in the moment. Personally, I also feel most at peace when I am with my family, knowing that the work I am doing is building something lasting for them and for the community around us.
