Life & Work with Faith Ann Cheek of Sunnyvale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Ann Cheek.

Hi Faith Ann, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Opening a franchise of Gideon Math and Reading was a team effort! Using my experience in education and the business acumen of my business partner, we used the researching and purchasing process as part of our joint project during our MBA program at Baylor University. I am a 36-year educator with experience as a classroom aide, classroom teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Executive Director, Assistant Superintendent, and CFO. My partner, Colton Thomsen, has vast experience in corporate banking, managed services, as well as mergers and acquisitions. With my passion for education and Colton’s expertise, we were able to open Gideon Math & Reading – Sunnyvale in May of 2024. We have served over 175 students in our community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The most challenging part of this journey was getting our center opened following a remodel of a 2nd generation retail space and the many permits and inspections required by the town. We were delayed approximately 6 months from projected opening but it has been smooth sailing since opening.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Gideon Math & Reading offers supplemental education in both Math & Reading for students aged 3 through adult. Our program focuses on mastering basic skills with fluency and building a strong foundation for academic success.

Students meet twice per week with an instructor in a small group setting of never more than 3 students to 1 instructor. Our curriculum materials are consumable, so students are able to take the work home for practice and reinforcement. The more work a student accomplishes, the quicker the student progresses through the curriculum.

One of the most important aspects of Gideon Math and Reading is that it is affordable for families. We also have recently been approved as a Parent Directed Special Education Services (PDSES) provider through the Texas Education Agency and for eligible students and families, we can direct bill to TEA for tutoring services, saving families up to $1500.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love everything about our city except the Dallas traffic and “Super Summers.”
