Hi Carmen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From an early age, I was fascinated by household finances. I wanted to write the checks, balance the checkbook, and update the budget spreadsheet. My mom always prepared our family’s taxes, and I remember reading through the tax booklets and even practicing returns on paper. In high school, my economics professor introduced us to Wall Street and financial statements, and that sealed it for me. I knew I wanted to be an accountant. (Being a Libra probably helps too, balancing budgets and following rules has always come naturally to me.)
I built my career in higher education and nonprofit accounting, specializing in endowments and foundation operations. Along the way, friends and family would come to me for tax advice and referrals, and I realized it was time to create something of my own. In 2022, I founded AccuOPS, short for “accurate operations.” Since then, I’ve been fortunate to help individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits with tax preparation and bookkeeping, combining my lifelong passion for numbers with a commitment to making finances approachable and accurate.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes, overall it has been a smooth road. I find it incredibly rewarding to help clients make better financial decisions around their taxes and business operations. If I had to name a challenge, it would be social media. I’m naturally more reserved and prefer working behind the scenes, so putting myself out there online has definitely been outside of my comfort zone. But I’ve learned that sharing knowledge and showing up for people in that space is just another way to serve my clients, and that perspective helps me push past the nerves.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, isn’t just measured in numbers or revenue. It’s when clients feel clarity and confidence about their finances.Whether that’s a nonprofit understanding its foundation reporting, or a small business owner finally feeling on top of their books. Success is seeing someone go from overwhelmed to empowered, and knowing I played a part in that transformation.
On the business side, I also see success as building trust and long-term relationships. Starting AccuOPS in 2022, my clientele has grown through referrals. That shows that clients recognize and value the integrity and accuracy we bring to the table. For me, that trust is the highest form of success.
Success means creating something sustainable, a company that grows with clients, adapts to their needs, and makes accounting approachable instead of intimidating.
